Thread: Best smelling and longest lasting Bay Rum scent?

So I've been using C.O. Bigelow for a while and I'm getting ready to run out. I sort of want to stay in the Bay Rum family, but I want something that lasts a little longer. I've only ever smelled the Royall and Bigelow in person and I find the Royall to be too clovey. The Bigelow smells great but it just don't smell for long. I was looking at Ogallala, Taylor of Old Bond Street, and Geo F. Trumper. Anyone know anything, have any suggestions? Remember, I want something that smells like Bigelow, but has more longevity.

well, it depends on both counts..... The best smelling part is completely subjective because everybody likes certain notes and not others in his/her scents. The longest lasting part is also hard to answer because your skin, how much you sweat, etc..... plays an important role on how long a scent last on you. Typically, bay rum does not last too long because the oil is very volatile and goes away fast so true bay rums (pure), do not last too long. I am very fond of Royall, St. Johns and Dominica but my benchmark is Royall Bay Rhum and I am a bay rum lover.

I think Al hit the nail on the head, too many factors to consider to fully answer your question. But considering you didn't mention Dominica I'll just go ahead and recommend it. Dominica also happens to be my favorite bay rum...

IMO as far as scent longevity goes Clubman bay rum probably up there at the top. But it is heavy on the cloves so it may not be for you.

Another factor is that your nose gets used to the scent and it appears to fade. It may actually last longer than you think.

Does it have to Bay Rum...?
Out of all the AS, and Balms I've tried, nothing comes close to TOBS Sandalwood Luxury Aftershave Gel. This stuff has a very strong Masculine Sandalwood smell, granted it's not bay rum, but this stuff doesn't fade, you can't get used to it, and it won't hide...
If you put it on at night, you can still smell it in the morning...

But for a more traditional, Island Bay Rum rather than the more Cowboy-ish Clove Bay Rum that lasts, I would go Dominica or Bois de Inde.. You mentioned TOBS and yes that is a long lasting scent but also a bit toward the clove side than not...

I'd like to echo this statement. Long after I can stop smelling on my face, my girlfriends can still smell it.

I'd also like to put a good word in for Dominica, its my AS of choice, although I do want to try out this flyingbird stuff.

St Lucia is good stuff also.

It is more Bay Laurel than anything, less burn (maybe because there is little or no clove). Light and very refreshing. I use it as a post shave astringent nearly every shave. Scent is very very short lived.
