Thread: Virgin Island Bay Rum - First Impression

The smell is decent, but my wife says it smells like those Christmas Pine Cones.

I splashed some on after a shave today, OMG the BURN. Cool and refreshing? It burned for 5 minutes, and my face seems to be more sensitive and tender after words. Is that what they mean?

I ordered some Ogallala Bay Rum After Shave and Soap sample packs, maybe it will be better for me.

this is my number one go to aftershave.. i've never had a lady not sniff herself dizzy around me while wearing it..

my girlfriend is always telling me.. "wear that cinnamon one"

on the otherhand... ogallala smells like eggnog to me.

I have the Ogallala Bonanza PAck (sampler) and am quite pleased with the scents. I've been using the Bay Rum/Limes & Peppercorns a lot lately.

@victor, I would agree that it does smell like eggnog while in the bottle, but once on the face, that changes.

I have never had an aftershave burn like the Pinaud Bay Rum. That said, I love the way it smells. I almost didn't buy it because it has a definite "skunky" smell to it in the bottle, but it was on sale for $.55 so I figured I would give it a shot and fell in love with it.

I also have the Ogalalla Bay Rum, Limes and Peppercorns and it smells great as well. Also, it has no burn on my skin.

The more burn it has means the more alcohol it has. Many of these ASs are made here in the U.S with the scent shipped in so basically they consist of water, alcohol and scent. I use some Bayrum my wife got me when she was in the islands and it contains some rum and some brown sugar mixed in and has a bay leaf in the bottle.

I commented on that smell about a year ago. No one else seemed to notice it, but recently I've read other posts where someone has noted that skunky smell. I've detected it in other Pinaud fragrances as well - Clubman and Lilac Vegetal (which by the way used to smell really good back in the early 70's). Very curious what ingredient causes it, and why on earth it's added.

And yes, Pinaud bay rum burns like crazy. It literally cauterizes.

I enjoy the burn. I don't feel right if my aftershave doesn't burn when it goes on.

I've noticed the skunky smell as well, fortunately it fades almost immediately after applying it.

That smell you notice is because the stuff has a dual purpose. One is an aftershave and the other is a bug killer.

Perhaps I just need to get used to it?

My wife does like the smell of it.
