Pinaud Clubman - woah!
Guys
Fairly new to SR shaving - probably on my 20th - 25th shave or so. I was hooked early on with all the soaps, creams, AS's, colognes etc - seemed to me to be the best part of the whole shaving scene.
I read alot of reviews on AS/Colognes on SRP and there seemed to be a bit of a consensus that Pinaud Clubman was THE fragrance to be wearing post shave. I'm in the UK, but it just so happened that my good buddy Andy was visiting his folks in Phoenix. I looked up the details on SRP and my good bud managed to pick me a bottle of the said AS for around $5.
I just met up with Andy tonight for a few beers (and shooters, and cocktails!) and he gave me my prezzies, which included the Pinaud Clubman AND a Diamondbacks Baseball Shirt.
I was well chuffed (i.e. happy) but on smelling the AS, I can't help but feel a little let down. To me, it smells like Talcum powder? I admit, I havent yet used it post-shave, but I wonder if it will smell as good as I hoped it would (after listening to all the rave reviews). I have a Colonel Conk Bay Rum soap and it smells pretty good, but I don't see the comparison between this AS and the soap. Am I missing something, or should I just have a shave and splash it on to get the full effect?
Cheers,
Barrie

Barber in Training
Just try it, it smells different on the skin-- you won't be disappointed. It does burn a little more than your average AS, but that just let's you know you're alive.

Does the barber shave himself...?
A good test of your shaving (or honing) is if it doesn't burn @ all when you put it on--the Clubman Burn Test or CBT if you will--maybe that acronym will catch on!

its good, i read and first thought it was like brut crossed with talc, but after the initial strong hit it isn't too bad, where i work there is quite often hot water and steam (food production) and when some steam hits my face it smells quite good. - heck i'm going to go splash some on now.

The allure of Pinaud Clubman is that is reminds one of the smell of an old time barbershop here in the US.

Well Shaved Gentleman...
If you're looking for a bay rum fragrance, then Pinaud Clubman is the wrong scent for you. It is a low priced knockoff of Dana's Canoe cologne, which was quite popular in the U.S. in the 1960s and used by many barbers as an aftershave on customers.
If you prefer a bay rum scent, then Pinaud's Virgin Island Bay Rum is the fragrance for you.

Yes, the whole Pinaud lineup was used by barbers not because it was wonderful stuff but because it was cheap. The versions they sell these days are really watered down. I remember in the old days after an application you really reeked from the stuff. I use the bay rum which is more clove actually and the scent doesn't last all that long.

Thanks for the responses folks. I don't have a particular fondness for bay rum scented products; I picked up some Colonel Conk bay rum soap out of curiosity. I was keen to try the Colonel Conk soap and bay rum sounded quite an interesting fragrance (I hadn't ever smelled it before). After reading the a thread on aftershaves I thought the clubman might go well with the soap. I've just had a shave there, and I can't say I'm hugely impressed with the soap. I found it takes ALOT of work to get a good lather, and it took a few attempts before I was happy with it. The shave was good - no better or worse than usual although my face was a little tingly afterwards, more so than usual. I applied an unscented balm straigh after the cold water, patted down the face, and then reached for the clubman. I had heard it was going to sting, and boy I wasn't disappointed! Wow, that would wake you up in the morning! My face feels good for it now though, and I am enjoying the scent. I'm going out for dinner with the good lady this evening, I'll not mention anything about it and see if she comments.
