Thread: Bay Rum Please

I would classify products like Clubmans ,and Masters as aftershaves or splashes. They are skin toners but because of the way that they are sold and designed to be used they're lumped in under splashes or aftershaves. Again the 3 main steps that shaving involves is 1 Clean, Tone, Moisturize .

There seems to be some confusion whether or not Clubman, or perhaps Bay Rum in general, is an aftershave or cologne. I could be wrong, but I believe many Bay Rums are marketed as "all purpose lotions", which would certainly not exclude use as an aftershave. Clubman's own website describes their own Bay Rum as, "Not just an after shave, Virgin Island Bay Rum instantly cools, refreshes and tones the skin,".

The scent of Bay Rum which is usually pretty light and doesn't last all that long is well suited as an all purpose lotion. Just about every bottle I've seen says all purpose on it. I would never call any bay rum a cologne because the scent is way too light unless it has other scents mixed in which changes what it is like the clubman for instance which is really not bay rum but more clove scented.

Just got a bottle of Captain's Choise Bay Rum. 4 oz for 15$ And 5 small samples free. Tried it a few times but almost like my Dominicas Bay Rum better. Especially the lime version. They also have a glass bottle old style you can order additional. Very nice. Came with the valentine package, 33$ in a fancy wood box.

Personally, I prefer a bay rum blend, rather than a straight Pimenta Racemosa single note. Yeah, bay rum EO is just a bit too flat for my taste and notes like clove or lime or vanilla or cinammon.....etc can make things more interesting.

I've tried many bay rum AS and cologne products, and I found two aftershaves I really like the scent of, and maybe a few colognes like St Johns and one other I can't remember. The problem is these aftershaves are small batch items made by various forum members. One's called Barbershop Bay Rum and has a rum base rather than the usual alcohol version. Made by a UK forum member and not often available because of the aging time needed. Ill include a pic with the ingredients list...very tasty!

The other one's called Kramperts Finest Acadian Spice Bay Rum and it's also made by a US located forum member. Unfortunately, it's not something that's for sale in many States, but Brian was nice enough to send me a bottle when we did a deal a while back. This one also has a rum base and is a very lively mix.

Best thing is to try em all yourself. The nice people at Barclay Crocker, Inc. have a hell of a good bay rum sampler package for a very reasonable price. Heh, I ordered it years ago and it helped me figure things out. I'll include a pic of what was sent me at that time.

Does anyone know if there's a bay rum out there that has a little menthol in it? I love the smell of bay rum but don't like hot sting. I tend to prefer the cool blast of a Proraso style.

For menthol, Royall Bay Rhum all purpose lotion--it's my favorite bay rum and if you like the menthol of Proraso, it's for you. It's a bit on the pricey side; the best I've seen is through Amazon--about 30 for 8 oz., but you can get a two oz. for less. However, it's quality stuff.

I get bay rum from a West Indian salon, one of them is double strength and one is normal. One has menthol and I think one doesn't. I'll take a look tonight and post what exactly it is for you...

West Indian Bay Rum Original includes menthol in the ingredients...

West Indian Bay Rum Double Strength doesn't include menthol if memory serves correct. I don't have the original bottle of this anymore.

West Indian Bay Rum Mentholated must be swimming with the stuff but I haven't seen that in my local shop yet.

They're great for the price but I have no idea of availability in North America so this is probably of no help whatsoever to you! Good luck with your quest.
