Thread: Martin de Candre vetiver

Gentlemen,
It is no secret that Martin de Candre is an alluring shave soap. I find it exquisite in every respect. I, however, have never tried Martin de Candre's vetiver/aftershave — good smelling water, so to speak. Has anyone tried it and what are your thoughts on it? Many thanks.

I know what you mean. I thought we would be flooded with responses.

I was extremey disapointed with the sample I tried. I'm a true hardcore vetiver addict and I dont really consider this true vetiver at all. But then again I aim for the pungent, dirty, earthy smell of vetiver.

What vetivers do you like Max? I had a soap sample from SRD that I loved in vetiver. Anything similar in your experience?

Just saw this wonderful post of yours. I have all 3 versions:

1. Eau de Vetiver
2. Eau de Lavende
3. Eau de Limette

I really like them all. Vetiver is my favorite. Lavende had to grow on me because of its strong raw lavender scent, but I am definitely there. When applying these, I not only put a tab on the neck area, but also some on my under shirt so to speak. This way, I can smell it all day long without worrying about the longevity

The only vetiver I have smelled so far was a shaving cream sample, which was by Cyril Salter. I did not enjoy the smell and haven't even tried the cream. I would be interested in knowing how that one stacks up when compared to the ones you speak of here, as I do think I should give vetiver a fair shot before writing it off.

My vetiver touchstone, so to speak, is still the classic Guerlain formulation. Almost impossible to beat the scent though some have come close.

Like my friend, Maximillian, I tend to be a hardcore vetiver freak. I like mine raw, earthy and pungent. Martin de Candre's take on it was not at all what I was expecting. To me it is a rather nondescript fragrance with a hint of the grass note one can find in some vetiver fragrances rather than from the root of the plant as I prefer. If you are looking for a very light scent that is fleeting, and you're ordering from MdC already, try a small bottle. Otherwise, get your fix elsewhere!

If we're talking shaving the only ones I have and use are Cyril R Salter French Vetiver and Alraz Vetiver which he made at my request. At some point the older Cyril R Salter's was even more pungent and raw. They must have reformulated but it's still raw and grassy. Just a tad milder to the older cream. Still a dream to use. I always feel like sticking my nose in the tub. Alraz's is extremely vetiver too. He made me a version with extra vetiver potency.

As to EDT's or EDC's. There's a handful mentioning that are excellent but the one I will always love is the old vintage Vetiver de Guerlain and vintage Vetiver de Carven. Sillage on Carven is very short for me (2 - 3 hrs) but I can still smell the Guerlain the day after. It's the only EDT together with vintage Habit Rouge de Guerlain that has the longest staying power on my skin.
