I just got another Jonathan Crooks. It has some nice etching on the tang. I won it for $27.25. I was happy with that!

    Hi,
I'm not a collector but came across the site while researching my wife's family tree. Jonathan Crooks married into it in 1759, 16 Dec Jonathan Crooks Cutler married Jane Wrakes (Wreakes).
    The Crook(e)s line was:
Israel bap Sheffield 27 Nov 1701 son of John (a carpenter)
Jonathan bap Sheffield 17 Nov 1730 son of Israel
Marmaduke bap Sheffield 16 Dec 1760 son of Jonathan (Cutler)
Jonathan bap Sheffield 20 Apr 1788 son of Marmaduke (Cutler)
Henry born Sheffield 16 Aug 1811 son of Jonathan Cutler.

I hope that this will be of some help to you. I will sort out the other family members and add them later.

    Best wishes
    Mick

Based on two full pages of information in Tweedale's Directory Jonathan Crookes is a completely separate company from Brookes and Crookes Ltd.. Thomas Crookes of the Brookes and Crookes firm had little direct experience in the cutlery trade. In 1851 he was working as a working a solicitor's managing clerk. In 1858 he joined in partnership with John Brookes.

I just aquired a Brookes & Crookes straight , just the blade , it was with another straight given to me by a close friend , it was his Dads .
his Dad passed away at the young age of 92 . dont know when he aquired them .only marks on blade are , Brookes & Crookes on top ,
the trade mark bell in between , and Makers Sheffield below , no scales . while i am here i should seek info on the other straight ,
only marks are , what appear to be , Garantie , spelled that way , on top , below that , looks like the last letters , bis , in front of those are
the numbers 42 , on reverse , or back , inside a circle , HB 520 , also looks like original horn scales .
any and all info appreciated .
    Thanks a bunch

Just joined SRP . I just aquired , yesterday , a Brookes & Crookes Blade , no scales , below Brookes & Crookes is the trade mark Bell , below that
reads , Makers Sheffield . French , Single Stabilizer , Quarter Hollow . any ideas on when it was made , approximate . I received this blade with another
that I am having trouble Identifying , it also is , French , Quarter Hollow , what I think are bone scales , blade measures 7/16ths , only marks I can find are , Garantie , spelled that way , what appear to be , last letters of RIS ,before that the number 42 , on back , or reverse , a circle with HB520 inside .
not sure if this is the correct place to post about this straight , just asking for info .
    Thanks
