Globalisation describes an ongoing process by which regional economies, societies, and cultures have become integrated through a globe-spanning network of communication and trade. In the spirit of globalisation, this razor came to Berlin from Solingen via an American in Japan.
Revisor are back in business (see our vendors corner), and this 6/8 shoulderless blade with a thumb notch and hollow-ground carbon blade is a new razor. Here is a bit about Revisor (see their website for more razors, and some very nice NOS ones, too):
So, on to the review...Historie
Since 2004 we developed a new razor collection based on the old kind of quality and tried to introduce new ideas for furthermore increased quality and improved production methods. The old existent skilled workers, partly 70 years old, are still involved with commitment. It‘s a point of honour for the old loyal co-workers to transfer decades-long experience to younger colleagues.
Craftsmanship: The craftsmanship is good, but not perfect. The razor has some minuscule grind marks on the tang, the goldwash is not the best in the world, and the wedge shows a bit. All the other details are perfect, though, as you can see in the pictures. The etching is particularly interesting. It is called "Tiefenätzung" (deep etching, or relief, ie you can actually feel it well). The varnish on the blade and the spine is beautiful, and also well done.
Balance: The razor is perfectly well balanced. I like the way the razor feels and shaves even better than the Dovo "Bismarck" 6/8, which is also shoulderless and has a thumb notch.
Collectability: You never know. This is apparently a new forging, and Revisor may decide to make more of these razors. If not, this razor would get a 9 for me, because it is beautiful and works well.
Price: Approx USD 190, which puts the razor in a different league from the Bismarck, which costs approx USD 50 less (ie a new strop, or two tubs of Castle Forbes's shaving cream). Revisor are a small company, though, and I find the price justified by the work that went into this razor.
Overall: This razor is an interesting alternative to the Dovo "Bismarck". Its performance is similar, but in my opinion somewhat better. The style, while similar, has more class, making the razor look and feel more valuable. Whether this translates into the difference in price remains an exercise for the reader.
I am certainly glad I was able to obtain this razor, albeit via a long and winding road, and would like to thank JimR for honing it to perfection.
