Thread: What's a regrind?

I was close to buying a Livi regrind from Lynn, but it wasn't what I wanted exactly, so I passed it up. Then I got to thinking, I'm not sure I know what a regrind is. Presumably, it's a "factory" second that had to be re-worked, but that's a guess. Can anyone kindly clear it up for me?

There are two types of regrinds that I know of. The kind I'm learning to do is where you take a vintage razor, usually a heavy-grind blade with lots of spine and bevel wear, and grind in the hollow with a belt grinder. That gets down to fresh metal and removes the hone wear. If you do it right, it looks like a new razor.

I'm guessing that the Livi regrinds are a little different. I think he has a stock of unfinished vintage razor blanks that he's doing the finish grinding on. "Regrinding" is what blademakers call the finish grind after heat-treatment.

Hopefully Lynn will chime in here--I'm sure he knows for certain.

When you get your answer and it sounds good enough to convince you to order a Mastro regrind, you can review it here. And then maybe you can get your review moved elsewhere. How do I know?

At any rate, Classic sells them when in stock. I bought one in ebony from Lynn when he was selling a couple. They are very nice razors - sharp from the Mastro - and shave very well.

There was a post about this a while back on several forums. These are supposed to be never finished old stock blanks from one or more well known but now long gone razor companies.

Final grinding was never done. My understanding is that the maestro does the finish grinding and possibly the heat treatment and turns these into finished blades. Sort of a joint project one might say......something like a vintage Ern or Solingen blank and a well know maker finishing them up today. The best of both in some ways.

The Livi regrinds are never-used-before blanks which were forged by a Maestro Pinin about 50 or 60 years ago. He specialised in razors and scissors. His grandson continues the family tradition and is respected in making custom scissors.

Some time ago an old box of Pinin razor blanks were uncovered by the family. They are beautiful blades which are in great shape and have never been given an edge. The grandson and Maestro Livi agreed to work together to bring these to market. Maestro Livi polishes the blades to their original condition and puts an edge on them. Then he makes his beautiful scales for them, of course.

I have seen the box of blanks in his workshop as well as some of the finished pieces. All I can say is that, despite owning a custom, I desperately want one of these which is ultimately a collaboration between two great Maestros, Pinnin and Livi! (Albeit, the work being spread over half a century!)

And here's a shot from within the Maestro's workshop with what I believe are a load of the regrinds after restoration. Seriously, these are far from factory seconds. These are highly desirable collaborations which most definitely have a finite stock, and once they're gone, they're gone for good!
