Thread: Dovo Best Quality - full hollow or half hollow?

can't even say I'm a newbe, as I haven't yet even bought my first str8. Been following here for a while now and toying with the idea, and as per the beginner's guide and the wiki, decided to get me a 6/8 half hollow ground razor. I've been browsing the SRD site a lot (can't remember if I got here from there or vice versa), and finally set my eye on this: Dovo Best Quality Black 6/8 Straight Razor & Strop Set - $117.99 : Straight Razor Designs, The Finest In Gentlemens Shaving And Grooming Needs

( a brush and a bowl I have already, as I'm currently using my grandfather's Gillette fatboy DE).

on that link itself there is no mention of the blade grind type, but when viewing the entry on the razor by itself, i noticed something:
while this blade's image is the one shown in the beginner's guide (where it says to get a 6/8, half hollow blade) , and on other sites it has been described as half hollow ground, SRD's description describes it as a full hollow ground blade...

so i'm confused - does the Dovo "best quality" come in 3 width flavors(4/8, 5/8, 6/8) AND in 2 grind flavors (full- and half- hollow)?
if so, how can I specify which I want on the set order?
is it an error on the other sites , or a different blade?
does it really matter all that much to a beginner whether its a half or full hollow?
i'll be much obliged if anyone can shed some light.

You will not go wrong with SRD products. Dovo is a quality razor, I think you will be happy with it. Good luck!

I have assumed as much, mainly after browsing the forum extensively. I'm still curious about which grind type it is....

The Dovo Best quality is a full hollow blade.

Welcome!! Dovo razors are excellent quality. You can't go wrong.

A couple of months ao I would have agreed with getting the Dovo, today I will stick my neck out and say you can do better for less money.

My first Razor was a Best Quality and I didn't know better, it shaved well but because of newbie poor stropping technique it dulled quickly.

I had it honed (by one of Englands finest) but it does not shave as well as some of my vintage (cheaper) Sheffield razors.
Hell it doesn't shave as well as a $40 razor I bought shave ready off a member here in the classifieds!

I say buy a razor from Larry @ Whipped Dog or get a razor from one of the respected members here in the classifieds.

I won't be buying another Dovo...infact I might well be selling a Best Quality soon

Sorry Jaycey, I have to disagree with you. I have lots of razors, new and vintage, American, English and German (including a few Dovos). The Dovos are very nice and I would say they carry an edge just as well as any of the others. My Dovos are solid performers, including my Best Quality razor. For a basic razor, it's great. Maybe there was something about the way your Best Quality razor was sharpened that it didn't turn out quite as well as your others.
But, I do agree that you can find lots of great vintage razors that are just as good and cost a lot less than a new Dovo. In particular, I find that vintage American brands are some of the most undervalued razors you can find. That might be a good place to start.

Grizli, that's a great deal for a new Dovo from SRD. Don't pass it up, especially with the 2nd free Honing from Lynn. I don't know anyone who has been disappointed with SRD's service. And, as has already been said, it's hollow

The folk at SRD do answer questions like this....!

Dovo makes a very long list of razors that run from
inexpensive to golly...
They are all good razors, especially when tuned up
by a professional.

The the 6/8 or 5/8 width is a toss up. I like the looks of my
wider razors but they all shave well.

Full hollow, Half hollow razor --l you will want to try
the other some day. Since both shave well I think
your kit choice is a fine one. IMO, A full hollow gives better
hints and feedback as it begins to dull. I think
I can put a better edge on the full hollow quicker
but quicker is not a goal that is very high on my list.

Sheffield, Solingen, Eskeltuna, etc. Different strokes. The only way to know for sure which you like best is to try them all!
