Thread: Wonderedge Blade- What would YOU do?

Hi All,

I acquired this as part of a lot of razors a while back. It's a Pearlduck Wonderedge, no scales. Looks like a big chip was honed out of the heel, it's 13/16" at the toe, 6/8" at the heel. Hone wear is a hefty ~2mm and fairly even. There is light pitting on the blade, but nothing too bad. I haven't honed it or shaved with it. It is just sitting in a drawer and I'm in a purging mood, so I'm trying to make a rational decision about it's fate.

I know this is supposed to be one of the holy grails of razors, but I am just not feeling the love! (probably due to condition and aesthetics). Trying to decide if I should: A.) breadknife it to get rid of the massive heel/toe slope, give it some nice scales, hone it up, and have it as part of the rotation, or B.) Sell it as is to someone who is dying to have one and would REALLY enjoy it and fix it up properly.

I am not interested in spending money to restore it at this point, I have overspent on razors and my collection is 'complete' for the moment. If it was really nice it would be a no brainer (to keep), but as is I don't know...

What would you do if it was yours?

Based on the photos I'm seeing it really doesn't look that bad. If it was me I'd fix it up and hone it. For a little effort you would have one fine razor. Of course it's your razor.

However, if you breadknife it we're gonna come over to your house and punch you in the nose.

I just think it looks really goofy with the thick toe and skinny heel. Just can't see myself using it like that without fixing it somehow. I wouldn't know how to 'straighten' it without breadknifing it (and the subsequent punches).

Personally I'd have a go at restoring it, but if you just don't want to then put it in the classifieds here. I'm sure someone would make you a decent offer. I'm already overspent for now as well btw, but someone here would be able to make you an offer.
I suppose I someone should make the standard "I'll look after it for you" comment, but you'd deserve something in return for something as nice as that. Just don't junk it, k.

I see what you mean-It dosent do much for me either,and after shaving with my cousins,which took a year of hinting since he hasent used it since the 80s,it shaved well enough,but not the "wonderedge" I was expecting,just my 2cents.

1/16" is not a great amount of slope.... polish it... rescale it.... you can always REMOVE metal... but the metal stretcher don't work too well.....

if it were mine... i would hone it and love it...

i would also be interested in taking it off your hands... so DIBS!!!

If you want to stick it in the mail to me, I wouldn't complain . I'd be willing to either spend $ having it fixed or have a go at it myself. I just got some washers from microfasteners and some scale material from Rockler...

If I felt the way you seem to feel about this blade, I think I'd give it to a nice family out in the country and let it live out its days on the farm. Oh, wait, that's what my parents told me about the dog...

I'd probably put it up for sale, so someone could buy it and do the right things for it.

I agree that significant amount of steel has been removed. The shoulders on these look very different when new. If you want to try it, stick it in a pair of scales, hone and use it. Otherwise sell it/give it away/trash it, whatever you feel like, it's your razor.
