Thread: A little help? I need to ID this razor

This razor has been sitting in my "to do" box for sometime. It's going to be my next project. Could someone help me out with it? Not even sure what language the characters are. Would appreciate anyone with some insight chiming in. It's an interesting blade. Very shallow grind, a near wedge. The blade itself is rather long (3.25"), and the monkey tail comes to almost a sharp point rather than rounding off. I am pretty certain that the scales are not original since the blade doesn't even come close to fitting between them.

Wade and Butcher had a razor called the "Chinese" razor because of some similar characters, although the characters were simply characters and not Chinese. Salesmanship, pure and simple, this may be one or similarly marked for the same reasons.

I love the brass (I assume) inlay on the pivot.

Thanks nun2sharp. Thanks for the input. No other marking on the blade at all other than the characters you see in the photos. Do you know if the W&B carried any of their traditional stampings on their "Chinese" razor?

I have an acquaintance that reads and speaks Chinese. I'll direct him here and see if he can offer any insight.

Thanks Joed. I would be content knowing that the characters are just gibberish if it contained other stampings to positively identify it. I am just a little curious about it since there are no other markings. It seems to be a quality older razor nonetheless.

It says, "If found, please return to Theseus." I'll be willing to pay postage and reward you with a puck of William's Mug Soap.

Since it is the only markings on the razor I would be very surprised if the markings had no meaning at all.

Wullie, These are archaic Chinese character-2,000 years back. They are only used today on making Chinese seals. In this case I believe it is an ornate usage of a brand name. The middle character looks like "good". I have sent a request to a Chinese friend in Singapore and he may offer some good advice. It may be Chinese or Japanese. Jim
