Thread: Razors by price range? Suggestion for bday

Hi all! First post and am happy to become part of the community.

I am new to straight razors in that I recently received my first from whipped dog and don't have much else for reference.

I do have a birthday around the corner, and am looking for a reason to help "justify" some rad. I have been reading and havnt seen any topics related to straight razor price brackets. I'm assuming there are standards that the community goes by when referring to razors and costs etc.

Is there a post or place to find say straight razors by price- say ~$100/~$200 etc etc

I want to get a razor for ~$200 or below so any insight is great! If it helps my current razor is a 5/8 round. I am thinking I want to keep the round, but I am open to other sizing!

Welcome to the forum and straight community ! I would have a look at the classifieds here . I purchased a razor from a gentleman in Australia last year ( been straight shaving since May ) , great razor and well under $100 .
You could get the next size up -6/8th .

Tbh I would prefer vintage. But I do not know what brands/mfg are good and which to avoid.

I all honesty, if it is vintage, you almost can't go wrong if it's in good shape. Anything being sold in the classifides would be quality and last for at least your lifetime giving great shaves.

I would recommend any western style Japanese Straight you can find. They typically fall into the $150 to $200 price range. All my Japanese straights are excellent shavers.

+1 for Fbones. All the Japanese straight razors that i have tried deliever an amazing shave. You will enjoy a larger blade also. You couls also go with a nice W&B in that price range.

I love the look of the one piece scale vintage on Gem Star Customs. It seems like a steal at only $106, but i am not sure if 7/8 is good for a second razor? My hands are not overly large, and my current 5/8 "seems" fine.....but then again - you wont know until you try something and i am open to larger blades.

Regarding the western style Japanese straights - Im assuming "western style" means that they are foldable blades with steel from japan vs. the kamisori (sp)? which is one piece, correct? Are there any good resources for those types of razors?

nicknbleeding - thanks for the link to the DD - i saw that yesterday, and while I'm sure it is a great shaver, the aesthetics are not for me........... as for the W&B - i am not familiar? any links or resources?

On a side note - i just learned that my brother in law has about 8-10 old vintage straights laying around. I had him read off some of the writing on the blades, and to name a few there were sheffields, prima, a japanese lettering one, and some misc others...... I will see if i can snag them all for pics and identification.

You just need to snag those razors from your brother-in-law ASAP and have them professionally honed, you will have a nice rotation and a good variety of razors all in one.
