Thread: Barhep Razor

I just bought a Barhep razor made in Solingen Germany. Would anyone know anything about them? Thanks

only bit I can help out with is that for the most part Solingen made blades are regarded as good quality, high grade steel.

Also I could add that so many straights were made in solingen that a lot of companies no longer have records as they were very small companies, if not companies which bought razors from other larger companies and then resold them under a different name.


The best help you could get would be to post a picture of it, and that accompanied by a few tests could tell you if the razors good for YOU.

If its a clean, straight blade and the scales are in good condition, its quite probably worth a good hone and a try shaving. Might turn out to be a gem, who knows.

Welcome to SRP. As Rocan stated, get 'er honed, it may be a gem. Solingen razors are usually great shavers. I have a bunch of off brand vintage razors that give great shaves. Here is one, a small 4/8's and really not a looker. I'm really not big on 4/8's razors but this one is a shave-a-holic! It's a J. Dawidowitz. If anyone can give info on this one I'd be very surprised.

It's a Jewish surname. Most likely, from Poland, Latvia or Lithuania.

I'll have to see if I can put my hands on it. The search may take a while, I have razors all over the place.

I thought I knew where it was, a bit out of the way but the first razor I put my hands on was the one I was looking for. Back side of the tang is stamped J. Dawidowitz 40 next line Kowna.

Front side of the shank is stamped with a clean cut man in a suit jacket from the shoulders (mid bicepts) up with FAWA in a circle of rectangular dashes followed by J.D. over K.

Too much effort to set up the camera and light box, maybe some day.

Kowna (Ковно), today is Kaunas, Lithuania.
The razor was made before bolsheviks came there in 1919.
I was in this city many times since childhood. My native city is located 300 km from there.
Joe, when you'll have time, try to make some stamp photos, please.

Thank you Manah. I'll do my best to get some shots of the stamps this weekend. We are expecting a foot or so of snow so it may be a good way to pass the time if I don't get a 'Honey do' list.

My Grandfather came from that area during the Russian revolution. My family said that he was a 'White Russian'. The name on the stamp is how my Grandfather, Joesf, spelled his last name. My father changed it a little. Wouldn't it be great if it were from my family?! Special thanks to Holli for bringing this razor to my attention. It was an EBay auction and I got it for a song.
