    Default Classic Gillette DE

Picked up a basic Gillette butterfly DE at a local garage sale over the weekend for $5. Cleaned it up, gave it a whirl yesterday. Damn fine shave. My normal DE is a Merkur 34C, and I can see why the Gillette deserved the name safety razor. Its rounded shape made it a very easy shave. You have to know what you're doing to get to DFS or BBS, but its doable. I'll turn it over to my son this summer.

Nice! I have my grandpa's '54 Gillette. Before I started using a straight razor it was my daily razor, and even now I use it from time to time. You can get away with using a more aggressive blade like a Feather or Bolzano.

I've only recently (as in the past month) started to buy a few vintage Gillettes and wow, those things are solid, they really don't make 'em like they used to.

I collected all the razors made by Gillette durring the quarter year of my birth. It took me a bit but I got them. I haven't picked one up since I started Straight Razor shaving but I'll never let them go. I also have one from my dads date of birth and his dad's date of birth.

I love the quality and the looks of the vintage Gillette razors. Besides my Merkur, all of my DE's are old Gillettes. Well made and dependable.

Good answer. But no. Maybe a mod can fix it.

Mr. Smyth, Gillette DEs can be addicting! I bought a 34 Aristocrat, the first year of the TTO. Since then I've acquired an additional 10 Gillette's and am not sure I'm done! Enjoy the fine shaves!

I have a few Gillette DE Razors handed down from my Father. It's all he used since the 50s. Damn fine shaves indeed.

I traveled extensively for decades and shaved with nothing but a DE, so that was my Go-To-Razor for on the road overnight travel, and Gillette DE Razors never let me down. I'm recently converting to Straight Edge while traveling (I always used Straight Edge at home), so I am retiring the DE for travel, for the most part. I'll probably still take one with me as a backup.

Congrats on finding one at a Garage Sale, OP! I never seem to get that lucky. I collect Vinyl Jazz and it's the same thing. Never find any Vinyl Jazz records at any garage sales anywhere, although my friends on the Vinyl/Jazz Forums find it all the time. I'm just an unlucky Garage Sale guy!

    Mahalo!
