Thread: First DE shave and.....

For the most part I am interested in straight razor shaving but a short while ago my son's barber (I shave my head so don't need one ) handed me 4 different DE shavers (and said "please take them, I don't need them).

So today I found a source for blade and hand me a great shave, only one nick and that was from a zit I cut!

Wonderful how you can just lop the heads off those bad boys before its too late I think DE shaving may make some have a smoother face just for the skin-scaping it does.

I shave with the straight razor, but my double edge razors are part of the rotation. The two forms of shaving share many similarities: proper angle, light pressure, standard beard reduction with each pass, and so on. When I travel, my wet pack includes two 4/8" straights and a little Merkur travel double edge (I have modified it with a Muhle-Pinsel shave head) in case I am pressed for time.

A note of caution: avoid speeding through your double edge razor shave. You not only will detract from the pleasures of shaving with the double edge, but also you will end up with some unwanted nicks.

For razor blades, it is best to experiment. Many of the vendors mentioned here have a good selection, including sample packs.

I've found that my skin is better since I started using a straight. I do use a DE when time is a factor. I don't know if you have them up there, but CVS has DE blades. They're not the best, but do work.

+1 to what Obie said. Rushing a shave is never good, as well as painful.

It turned out to be a great shave but I think I still prefer the straights!!
We have IDA here and that's where I got the blades but at a heavy premium of $4.99 Canadian so I will look at the vendors here and see if they can do any better.

DE razors are great.. but once you start experimenting with diff blades you might find that you like it even more. There are some blades that just dont like my face.

Some guys think shaving with a DE is somehow "cheating" on their straight razors, but I say nonsense. I love shaving with straights, but there will always be a place in my shave den for my DE's.

Well said, Ryan, my good friend. I love my straights, and I love my double edge razors, and the twain meet in my little shave kingdom. Who said too much of a good thing is bad?

As it happens, this fair morning here in the province, I plan to shave with my double edge. Why? Because I want to. The razor will be the Edwin Jagger "Chatsworth" lined barley with Gillette 7 O'Clock Sharp Edge "yellows."

Oh, what joy.
