    Default slant bar guard ?

What is the purpose/function of a slant bar guard on a safety razor?

The insert that came in the razor box "Diagonal Razor" explains it well. A bit hard to read at the size of the photo but essentially the guillotine stroke designed into a safety razor head.

Makes sense. Those look like some very handsome examples.

Works pretty well in practice too --- especially when you have several days growth. Coupled with a sharp blade (Feather), these are hard to beat.

Getting ready to buy an Edwin Jagger 89 for my first DE but i'm fascinated with the slant bars in your photo. They appear to be "vintage" examples? Hard to find? Expensive?

Yes they are. The current models are the same save for slight differences in plating and paint.

A modern Merkur slant can be had for less than $40....
