Default Edwin Jagger 89 OR Goodfella

Thought i would try DE shaving and the OCD has kicked in. I read one review here on the forum of the Goodfella ($55) and the Edwin Jagger 89 ($34) seems to be well liked. Some seem to think that DE's all shave about the same; then, of course, there's the blade itself. Any feedback on a FIRST DE would be really helpful. I like the idea of solid stainless steel as opposed to a plated material but the EJ89 (plated) is said to be finished very nicely. On the other hand, i sure like the look of the black Goodfella (a lifetime gaurantee also).

All DE's, blades excepted shave different. Some radically so. You look at models like the Mercur Vision or Slant Bar and the Pils, or Feather or the Gillette Fatboy vintage just as examples and they are all totally different.

I would pick the Edwin Jagger 89 over the Goodfella.

I like the Muhle R89 better than both razors.

The handle on the Muhle is better but if you are on a budget go for the Edwin. The heads on the Edwin Jagger and Muhles are the same.

Default Edwin Jagger 89 or Goodfella

    Hello, Michael:

If given the choice, I would definitely opt for the Edwin Jagger 89L (lined handle). I understand Goodfella is a mild razor. For me, the Edwin Jagger is fine razor all around. As for the workmanship, Edwin Jagger's will impress you. You can also try the Muhle 89R. This is the rich cousin of the Edwin Jagger — they both use the Muhle shave head, but the handles are textured differently.

    Regards,

    Obie

I would tend to agree with my good friend Obie. I have two Merkurs (HD and Futur), a 1960s Vintage Gillette Superspeed and just purchased an EJ Chatsworth. The EJ's workmanship is far superior to the Merkur and the Gillette.

Add a quality blade and you're in wet shaving heaven.

Just placed the order last night. I'm pretty excited to see what we will think. He used to use them when he was younger but stopped and started using the multiblades I guess he got caught up in the "hype"

One ? though is he going to be able to travel with that razor in a suitcase with spare blades? Or is the TSA going to go all crazy on him at the airport? I only ask since he travels quite a bit for work.
