Thread: Hybrid Safety Razor

First posting on this forum. Got a question for all the experts/experienced folks out there:

What if there was a hybrid of a straight razor and a safety razor. In other words, would it be viable to take the blade of a straight razor, shorten it and place it on top of a handle of a safety razor.

The advantage would be that you would not need to replace the blade, just sharpen it and you would have the benefit of easier shaving and more control with the handle of the safety razor.

Thoughts? Could this work?

I would think honing would be a big problem with the blade mounted into a housing. If you could remove it you would need some sort of mount for honing. Why not just use replaceable blades? The advantage to a straight are the infinite angles you have. This would be defeated in a frankenrazor like that.

That's exactly what it is, plus the box has a built in strop and barber hone.

I think you're absolutely right. The angles would go from infinite to fairly limited. My thought on having a straight razor blade would be to avoid the expense of the cartridges. I want a solution where you buy once and keep using for a long while.

+1 on the Rolls Razor, it is basically a Straight/ Safety combo.

Yep Rolls Razor. Got one coming in. New in the box. There are others and it shouldn't be too hard to cannibilize an old straight and make your own "rolls" razor.

I saw that exact description on the 'bay a few weeks back. Think it was called an Everite razor. Appeared to be a wedge type, about 2 inches in length. The box came with a flat strop and hone to restore and perfect the edge. I would have bid on it, but the auction was at $80 with 3 days left to go. Perfect condition.

As another example, check out the "Valet" auto-strop (or self-strop) razor, and a similar (or identical) model made by Feather in Japan.

They use single-edge blades, and have a leather strop that use the safety mechanism as a stropping-angle guide. They pop up on eBay occasionally.
