Thread: Identify this DE

I got this from my grandfather many years ago. I just started shaving with it the other day and love it. I'm never going back to disposible/cartridges again! Im so confused at why people left these, they are amazing. My question is, i checked the code list on B&B and when i look at my razor i cannot find any numbers what so ever. How can i find out what year it was made? the only marks on the underside are:

top left: Regus
top right: Pat. Off
bottom left: Gillette in diamond logo
bottom right: Made in USA

Inside the blade holder says: Patnos on pkg

Welcome to SRP. Appears to be a Gillette Super Speed. The black twist to open knob throws me as far as dating it but someone will be along with the info.

thanks for the warm welcome! i've been chatting on IRC for the past week now, this is my first post. Yea i have no clue model or year b/c there is nothing to referance against the list. hopefully someone can give me some insight. I do know that even with the crappy cvs brand blades i picked up for $6 it shaves 50x better then my Mach5!

Your best bet is to google 'blade sampler pack' and pick up an assortment. DE blade preferences vary with the individual and a sampler pack can introduce you to the choices available. Personally I found the Feather and even better the Gillette "Swede" blades the best for me. Of course a good pro honed straight razor is even better IME but that is something you can consider down the road.

actually i have one on the way. its a morely and sons 11/16 barber notch. got it from one of the users on the irc channel. im using this DE in the mean time and it will be my back up when my SR is out for honing and also for the parts of my face im not ready to tackle yet with my SR.

Upon further examination and cleaning, i did find a little x on the top left and a little 2 on the top right. I'm assuming that would mean its from 1977 2nd quarter?

I just came across this one in my grandfathers things that he gave me years back. Looks like its 1956 quarter 3. The letter code is B-3.

X would mean 1952, and the 2 is the second quarter. That is an old style Superspeed and is known as a black tip. Imagine that. They only made the black tip in 51 and 52 I believe.

Hmmm... not to argue with you but according to that date code sheet on B&B X could be either 1977 or 1952. How do you know the differance?

nevermind, i found the pictures of the black tip next info on the above sheet. looks like mine is the steel version of the 1952 black tip. Thanks a million for your help!

Next question, what are the differances between the 2 above razors or are they basically the same?

The blade gap of the red tip is larger than the blade gap in the black tip, so the red tip is generally considered the more "agressive" razor of the two. As I recall, the red tip is also a heavier razor than the black tip. Try different brands of blades in each and you'll decide which combination of blade and razor is best for you.
