Cool Kent "Skin Conditioning Shaving Cream"

Welcome to the last - for now - instalment in our SRP soap Robin's fight against boring old English scents. Cream sample as always courtesy of the great people at The Different Scent in Berlin.

Packaging: A red tube. If you like red tubes, this one is a killer packaging. It reminds me, however, of a certain hair gel that was popular among the grey unwashed in Germany in the eighties. In short: I have seen more exciting tubes in my life.

Texture: More a thick fluid than a cream. Works well if you have a bowl. Works less well if you do not.

Scent: The cream is, technically speaking, unscented. It is, however, mentholated. This provides a stunning cooling effect when rinsing it off with cold water at the end of the shave. Quite different. Make very sure to get a sample before you buy.

Latherability: Rather good. A little goes a long way, and puts the cream's price into perspective. I whipped it up with a best and a pure badger, and it performed equally well with both. The lather is thick, rich, and smells strongly of menthol. Once applied onto the skin, the cooling effect kicks in. Something one has to like.

Cushion: Equally good. Again not Castle Forbes quality, but up there with other good creams.

Moisturising: Way above average, but there could be tad more. A bit of Xpec after shave balm (I love this balm!) made up for it.

Price: 15 EUR for 75ml. Obviously, there are quite a few cheaper alternatives which perform as well.

Overall impression: This cream is not a keeper, because it underperforms, if not too much, when compared to Castle Forbes products, which are in the same price range. Still a good cream, and if you like the menthol effect, it might be for you.

Overall the shaving cream exceeded my expectations, in every area.
Although expensive it did turn out to be reasonable value, I expected to pay a premium for the Kent name.

I am not by nature a shaving brush user, but I found it an interesting experience, the lather stayed consistant throughout the shave and didn't dry out like some gels and soaps.

A good product worth trying if you always use a brush
