Thumbs up Straight Razor Designs Patchouli

In the interest of full disclosure, I won this soap as a door prize at the SRP straight razor get together in Asheville NC this year! It was choice of scent and the choices left were this and unscented.

Packaging: Pretty simple packaging. It comes in a black double walled tub with a home made printer label. It should look pretty comfy on any shave den shelf. It isn't the super packaging you would find on twice as expensive stuff, but Packaging only adds so much value to me. Besides, this tub travels well!

Texture: A great glycerine soap texture. Nice, slick, and wet to the finish.

Scent: Okay, so I went to a college that had a lot of "crunchy earthy" types and Patchouli was the go to shower stand in for a lot of these guys. When I picked up this soap, I thought "well, it is better than Unscented." Whoa Brunella was I wrong about thinking I was settling for a scent. This stuff is really nice smelling. A very manly scent with a rich warm fragrance that is very clean and refreshing. It is so not the "patchouli" that I had smelled before. This is top quality stuff. Like all of these soaps, this is pure EO.

Latherability: One word. Explode. This stuff lathers well on the face or in the mug and has a pretty good range of forgiveness in the water to soap ratio at a water hardness of 3.3 grains.

Cushion: Great cushion! The soap whips up with great surface tension.

Moisturising: It doesn't dry out my combination skin and that is a plus.

Price: $13.49 for a tub of this and it has lasted me since the meet at the beginning of June. It is going to be around for a long time judging by the way it is going now.

Overall impression: This is true to the SRD brand. The product is above average in functionality in a simple package in order to put it in the hands of as many folks as possible. It is my opinion that SRD is pushing out some of the best bang for the buck product on the market and this soap is no exception. Case in point: the price is set based on the essential oil with a starting cost of 8.99 a tub going up depending on the essential oil chosen. Great value with a superior performance payload.

    I will be buying more!

Reviewer's note: The soap is mixed a little loose in this photo (more water) because I like to finish lathering on my face.

I won some of this at a get together as well, and would definitely buy some when I run out.

It seems to be lasting quite a long time for the thick lather it generates.

I rated the moisturizing a little lower since it's a great soap, but not as moisturizing as something like Castle Forbes.

I think it's a fair trade off for the cost and longevity of this soap.

Now I really want to try this soap. As someone who supplied/created massage oils and creams, to local vendors many moons ago, I knew patchouli had a bad rap because of that very heady type over powering patchouli of the 70s/80s. When done right, or paired with it's complimentary scents, of which there are many for patchouli, it is actually one of the best, most masculine scents out there. It's used as a base note in many men's colognes.

And it's been my experience that when you wear the right kind of patchouli scents, it makes some members of the female population rather.....uh, frisky.

It's all about our own personal chemistry of course, and for some, it just doesn't work. But, patchouli has always worked well with my chemistry.

I'll N/A my ratings b/c I had an allergic reaction this one. So my review is more of a word of caution to those sensitive to FO's or large amounts of EO's like this. The smell was not to my liking either. It was like a straight up rubber factory. I like patchouli scents mixed with something else. The lather, packaging, quantity, quality is all great however. It's too bad I can't buy these soaps b/c of my skin burning.
