    Default Tabac Shaving Soap

Can't believe there's no Tabac review til now.

What is there left to say about Tabac, except that those new to shave soap should know it is one of the very best. Other soaps may have a less polarising scent, but Tabac delivers and performs superbly.

Contrary to Internet myth and the power of suggestion, Tabac DOES NOT smell of tobacco smoke. It's scent comes from the tobacco flower, which is a common fragrance used in many soaps and bathroom items. Tabac smells like a sharp, floral soap, and it really mellows with use.

Tabac creates a dense, creamy lather very easily, and allows me to shave closer than any other soap. Other soaps I have are very good, but if my lathering is inconsistent, the glide quality can be affected. This doesn't happen with Tabac, as it lathers very consistently, even if you don't.

If I could only use one soap, this would be it, but we all like to change things up a bit. So when I come round to using it after short layoffs, I'm still impressed when I use it again.

Try it, if you haven't yet. Yes, Tabac is also overhyped, but the sheer amount of noise about this product tells you that it's very good.

Personally I love Tabac. I agree that the scent is divisive, but personally I really like it! Its not a strong floral scent, though there is an element of it, but its a really fresh, clean scent and not overpowering.

It lathers like a dream, ten swirls of the brush and you've got enough lather to go swimming in.

It provides the definitive article of glide and cushion. All the other soaps I have are all judged against Tabac, the standard it sets is that good.

The price is excellent, with refills available for about £8, and a puck lasts ages. I've been using mine pretty regularly and I can still see the writing on the top of the puck.

The container is sturdy and well made, and holds the puck with a snug fit.

I would award this soap 100%, but until I've tried every soap out there I cant really make an informed decision..! Guess I'll just have to go try more soaps...! :D

This is as close to perfection as I've seen so far. Great lather, cushion, glide and its smells great as well.

Packaging: I purchased the puck by itself, it does look nice in my wood soap container thing.

Texture: It is a tallow based soap and lathers like one. Nice thick creamy lather.

    Scent
: I dont really pickup a scent other than soap. Other people think this is the worse smell in the world. Your mileage may vary.

    Latherability
: Very Easy to lather. Brush loads up quickly. Then lather builds quickly once you start adding water.

Cushion: I never really pay much attention to cushion. But I do believe there was a cushion there.
Price: I think I paid around $7-$8 for my puck. Good Deal in my opinion

    Overall impression
: This is my favorite soap and what I compare others too.

Phenomenal stuff. I'm still fairly new to shaving with a brush (and even more new at using a straight razor), but Tabac is always my go-to soap. It generates rich, fantastic lather, and my closest shaves so far have been when I used Tabac. It leaves my skin soft and well moisturized. I personally enjoy the smell, though some people clearly don't. I just bought the refill (cost me $14 cause I bought it locally), so I didn't rate the packaging. The ceramic dish does look great, however, and it seems substantial.

This was the first soap I tried, and it's my favorite. Get it, because the results are consistently excellent.

    Thumbs up

I must chime in here, as I've used the Tabac soap for the last four years on and off. I got it in the dish, and finally I can see the bottom of the dish. I'll buy a refill of this soap for sure. I love the dish too.

When I first got the soap, I thought the smell was a bit too "old school" for my tastes. However, the smell has grown on me to the point that I bought the Tabac Aftershave Lotion recently. The scent is spicy with notes of exotic woods and has a warm feel to it. Certainly a masculine scent. This soap will surely be part of my arsenal in the years to come. Very consistent and easy to work with.

I also rate Tabac highly - it is without doubt some kind of benchmark. It's worth noting that some people really don't get on with the scent, in which case it might be a good plan to get hold of Mäurer and Wirtz's Irisch Moos, which is generally held to be the same soap but with a more conventional scent. I don't happen to agree with that: I think it's a better performer, but I expect I'm in a minority there.

Tabac is ok, to me it is "over-rated" << ( this will stir up a nest ) there are better soaps for less money. The lather is pretty good but it needs to be a little slicker for my ugly mug.

But that is just my review.

I like it--I don't get deeply into shaving soaps (my main one is Williams after all), so I don't feel prepared to do the ratings. But I got some a couple of years ago and found the lather more than satisfactory, it lasted a long time, and personally I loved the smell.
