Aramis "Classic" shaving soap
As I get older, my memory keeps fading on a more regular basis. Like this:
- Car ready? Check.
- Razor? Check.
- Strop? Check.
- Alum? Check.
- Let's go!
So here I am in the middle of nowhere (referred to as "Oberfranken" by the natives) without soap, cream, pre or after shave. Great. Thankfully, I managed to convince my father-in-law to get his shaving kit from The Different Scent in Berlin so I could have used the full Castle Forbes "Lime" line. However, being an inquisitive mind, I saw that he had re-filled a wooden box that formerly was home to a cake of Mühle "Sea Buckthorn" soap with something else. A gift from his wife. So I thought, 'Why not?', and gave Aramis "Classic" a try. The disastrous results can be found below.
Packaging: n/a. I am not even sure if that soap comes with a non-generic bowl, but if it does, it should have a biohazard warning.
Texture: Extremely hard soap. Nothing my Simpson brush liked at all.
Scent: Scent? Miasma! It is "old school" in the worst conceivable way. If you like Tabac, you will probably love it, and that should settle this issue once and for all. To make matters worse, if that is even possible, it clings. And I am speaking hours, not minutes. The wife was not happy.
Latherability: Nothing to write home about. Possibly the worst soap I have ever tried. I tried every trick I know, but none would work. Apparently some guys over at TSD have managed better results, but I simply could not be bothered after more than 30 minutes of futile tinkering.
Cushion: Yes, cushion would have been nice. Unfortunately, there was none to be had from this soap, obviously, because the lather was so bad.
Moisturising: See above. While the soap does provide a lot of glide, it offers hardly any moisturising at all.
Price: I gave this soap a solid, resounding 0 points. I would not even take it as a gift. Overall impression: Performance, price, scent - I have a new winner in my "worst value for money" category. If this soap works for you, great. If not, welcome to the club.
