what is with the colonel conk soap? Is it really a shave soap? I tried multiple times to shave with it and it was really terrible. I used it as a reg. showering soap and it was alright actually...
did anyone else feel like this too?

woops...wrong forum. It'll prolly get moved.
I don't have a problem with Conk. It dries kinda fast so it's one of those soaps that work best once you've established yourself as a straight shaver and can move over terrain a little quicker. Yes, there are better soaps out there, but you can't beat their price.
What type of problem are you having? I use the bay rum scent and do not have a problem with it.
I'm with PACO on that one. My favorite is Bay Rum, I find the soap very easily to foam up and fairly priced.

Hello, Aznaod7:
The world of wet shaving is a circus of likes and dislikes, crazy habits and idiosyncrasies. What what might work for one may not for another.
Through the years I have used a wide selection of shaving soaps and creams. Some I have loved, some liked and some found to be a waste of money.
Currently I rotate 12 soaps and three creams. Colonel Conk is not one of them. Many gentlemen shavers like the Colonel. For me, it always has produced anemic lather and less than desirable glide and cushion.
No one is right or wrong about a specific soap. What matters is how that soap complements a gentleman's shave.
Regards,
Obie
There was a time when I used the Colonel. As I recall the amber was the variety. Compared to Williams it's a step up. My problem with it was the lather simply vanished from my face in short order. Too bad it didn't make my whiskers vanish with it.
I started with Col. Conk soaps and was happy with it until I became aware of other shaving soaps. I thought it could provide more cushion and be a little thicker and figured out that if I applied a little bit of Castile Soap on first, then applied the Col. Conk soap, it worked just as well as the more premium soaps.
Pricewise, its appealing to first time straight shavers who may get sticker shock at the more expensive soaps. It works and gets the job done.
30 second swirl on the puck and then 30 seconds on the face usually produces the desired results.

Col. Conk soaps work fine for me.
I use Conk Almond regularly b/c it is one of the few scents I have that the wife doesn't say smells like an old man.
First shave soap, which came with the straight razor set I purchased. Poor lather, dries the skin (like all glycerin soaps do for me) and dries fast, the last of which make it a poor choice for a new (and slow) straight shaver.
What is it good for? In the shower to prep your face before shaving (not to be equated with shaving in the shower - a NO NO).
