I will agree with you that just because soap has tallow as an ingredient does not assure that it is a fantastic or even a good soap. It is often difficult to find a quality soap that is not tallow. Penhaligon's English Fern with tallow as a first ingredient is, in my estimation, the finest soap that I have ever used and when they switched to "natural" ingredients their soaps are sub par and not worth the price of shipping. There also seems to be a correlation between taking out the tallow and ending up with a poor product and there are many examples that come to mind. It may will be that they don't bother to invest in new processes and procedures but simply make soap the way they always have without making the proper allowances, I do not know.
I look at some of the creams available that are not tallow based and they are, quite simply, outstanding so I don't understand why it is so difficult to make soaps that are not as good. Castle Forbes comes to mind when one speaks of an extremely high quality cream and there are others that I like equally.
That being said Martin de Candre is an outstanding soap by any comparison and I am sure that it will be in my rotation as long as no changes in the product is evident. The effort and care that the craftsmen have taken is something to be very proud of. I have some other soaps coming in from Europe so we will see how they stack up!
Take Care,
Richard
