Blade-wise, if you like the Soligens, you'll like the shave from the US makers. They're more plain Jane, but very similar.

You're probably right about the Sheffield part. Ludwig lived in the late 1700's when English blades pretty much ruled.
I'm not sure of the timeline but, don't know if Solingen blades became prevalent until later?

You might be wrong about the feedback part, though. I think it is more of a "felt" thing than auditory. At the time this was painted he was probably stone deaf but, a razor popping whiskers might have been the only thing he could hear. An audiologist could chime in here.

I only have one American blade...a Robeson. I think it's beautiful and it shaves well. But, it takes a little more honing effort to get a good edge. The blades in the post are so easy to maintain it's almost ridiculous. It's one of the reasons why I love 'em.

It looks like it is in the palm of his hand.
Look closely at his left thumb.
I see, perhaps, white scales there at 90deg to the blade.

my mom is German...
