Thread: How long have you been shaving with a straight?

After seeing the "How old are you" thread I was wondering. How long have you been shaving with a straight?

I first shaved with a straight about 30 years ago but stopped because I didn't have the proper tools to hone a razor. I started again about 20 years ago and have been using a straight fairly regularly since then.

I've been shaving off and on with a straight for almost 16 years. The off times were due to having a full beard or using a de/se safety razor because of time restraints.

I started shaving with a straight when Ronald Reagan was in his first term. I've tried different things here and there but have pretty much stuck with a straight. I was about 12 years old when I started with one straight, one strop and one (borrowed) hone.

I've been using a straight for about 7 months now. I've been using DE's for around 3 years. Wet shaving (mug and brush) with other razors for 19 years now.

I started believe it or not when I grew my first beard 30 years ago, my barber at the time taught me how to "Use a straight edge, to create straight lines" He went with me and helped pick out my first two straight razors and helped me order a stone and a strop to maintain them...
I dropped and cracked the second one somewhere in 1999 and didn't get back to them until 2006 I just couldn't take the irritation any longer...
I have tried, I believe every way to shave, except a Rolls Razor and by far, hands down, the Straight is the most comfortable for me...
I still have my original stone and my original strop although they are rarely used now, and I blame that on all the AD's I was afflicted with as soon as I joined SRP

Shaving since 2006 is much more of a hobby now than a chore, and I actually look forward to it every morning, I rarely take a day off shaving now... I also still have a light beard, I have only one time shaved it completely off in the last 30 years and that was for charity...

ive been shaving for almost a year now, i used money that i was given last xmas to purchase my first straight razor, became a member hear and have been playing the role of knowledge sponge on the forums ever since, there is no way i would go back to plastic razors now, its straights and DE razors all the way

Neither my Gran or Girlfriend are impressed about my decision as there both convinced im going to decapitate myself one day haha, and ironically it was the money they gave me that started the habbit.

Since 1982 while living with Contra rebels. It was the only way to shave back then, but it suuuuuuucked. Then again in 2003 I joined the Yahoo group, and it still suuuuuuuuucked! Then in about 2007 I finally figured out how to hone and strop and got great shaves from there. So I think there is a duality to the question. How long have I shaved with a straight and how long have I been doing it correctly?

Well, now we all want to ask AFDavis how much he knew and when did he know it?

I myself started straight razor shaving after I joined SRP, which was this September. Before SRP, I was never exposed to straight razor shaving. I just figured there had to be another way. I'm glad I found it.

I first stated (unsuccessfully) shaving with a Cut-Throat approx 17 or 18 years ago. I have only really been successful with the use of the CT over the last two, give or take a few months, years. Just before I found this site. This site has added much to my education since I did find it though. Thanks Lynn for what you have done in this regard.
