Thread: Taking straight razor on a cruise

I haven't been on a cruise for a few years and understand the security check has changed. The literature says no pocket knives, etc. I was considering taking a 7 d ay set, but wonder if I can board with several razors packed - or even one straight? Anyone have any experience recently?

I would say call your travel agent or the cruise line. Last thing you'd want to do is have to ditch the 7 day set. Although it may be possible to just pack it in your checked bag.

yea deffinitally check and if in doubt send it to me for safe keeping lol, for real call the cruise line hate to see you not be able to take them onboard after you pack them and bring them along. if they wont let you then take a de or se if you have one.

After calling the cruise line I would email them. When they respond to you with their answer, you will have written proof to show if anyone stops you. Also have your travel agent check for you. Can't be too careful.

Just be careful of those rolling decks.

The answer from the cruise line is no. Safety razor or electric are the acceptable devices. I'll have to suffer through with my DE. Hadn't thought about rolling decks!!

I went on a cruise earlier this year. Here are a couple of thoughts:

1. The ship does not roll enough to cause an issue shaving. I had no issue. Men have been shaving on board ships for centuries.

2. Security is by a private firm and probably not by the cruise line directly. I did not check before hand and took two razors with me, a feather and a TI. Funny enough they confiscated the feather but let the TI on board.

The good news is they hold confiscated items for you that you can pick up after the cruise is over.

The bad news is that I probably got lucky and they probably should have confiscated both of them

Btw, if they offer a shaving service on board, be careful because they probably use a Mach 3.

I agree with the roll issue, but I thought thebigspendur's comment was worthy of reply. I appreciate your comment about having confiscated items returned. This probably makes packing at least one straight worth trying. I just don't want to loose one of my babies. Thanks for replying. ( I guess carrying a pistol is out of the question!)

Actually it's true that people have been shaving for years on old sailing ships however most grew beards while out to sea. Having been in the Navy on smaller ships I recall a few guys who did use a straight and if you practice enough and learn the skill you can shave with a straight on a ship in rough sea however you have to time the strokes and there is a limit.

It's true cruise ships have stabilizers and you feel little.

I always shave at sea, have been for over a decade. The only time I don't shave with a straight is when it's so rough you need two hands to stand up and you wish you were an accountant sitting in an office with a boring desk job!
