Thread: Another question about oiling our razor

I was reading the other day that the old fashion oil 3 in 1 does a good job protecting tools against rust. Do you think it would be good for straight razors?

Don't see why 3-in-1 wouldn't work, but you would want to clean it off VERY thouroughly as it is not the most skin-friendly substance. That's why a lot of us use mineral or camellia oil as any trace amounts won't aggrivate your skin.

I use Wahl hair clipper oil as its fairly light but only because I have it to hand anyway and it's cheap

I give a light coat of baby oil on the blade and tang, works for me!

I'm a Tuf-Glide fan. It goes on really thin and stays put, even on highly polished blades.

I've used 3-in-1 on one of my razors. Seemed to work ok but it took a while for the "machine-shop" smell to dissipate. The smell was familiar and not at all unpleasant but seemed a little strange in a shaving setting. I could fantasize and imagine myself as the character "Riddick" shaving himself with engine grease and a combat knife on an alien planet.

The most popular oil in SRF seems to be Camellia oil. So I got some, Camellia sinesis 100% natural oil and started using it but found it to be a bit thick and when it drys turns into a kind of dry paste difficult to wash away. Am I using the wrong kind of camellia oil? Is there a particular brand I should try? Or am I doing something just wrong?!?!

Baby oil sound like a good idea too though...

I use Classic Shaving Classic Brand Razor Oil. Works great!

I use Camell oil cause it's natural.

I was thinking of using 3 in 1 as well, but then I realized that I am going to nick myself from time to time, and unless U really wash the razor off well before use, you may get some of that oil in the cut (not good)... With Camella I just wipe the razor off, strop and shave

I also use camellia oil and it works excellent.
No irritation at all.
