    Default Some of Zips recent finds - and need for two handles

    Aloha gents!

    Here are a some of my recent finds. An assortment of Oxford, Spike, Yankee Wedge, Alwin and a Wade and Butcher Barber Barber's Straight Razor.

    I need handles (scales) for the two blades. One a Solingen FWE Special and the other is a Hibbard Spencer Bartlett OVB.

    I have all but one oiginal box and an original leather case that I'm nursing back to health.

    That is awesome. I never thought about razor hunting in Honolulu. My wife love Oahu. One more good reason to go again. They look pretty clean.

    Nice grab, should clean up a treat. So what's your thoughts on scale material, if your making them.?

    By all means, RezDog, come on over and shop around. There are not a ton of vintage straights on the islands, but they are here. Even though it's very high humidity with salt air, most of the blades I have seen are actually in pretty clean shape. And if you like Japanese blades, you will definitley find them.

    :-)
    It would not be hard to convince my wife that we needed to go to a razor meet in Honolulu. She is not into the meets but the location would get her attention for certain, and she likes looking through antique shops with me.

    I am making them, Mike. Thanks for asking. Well, at least I'm making them unless I go super-exotic and can't fabricate them myself.

    I was thinking something from the islands, of course. Perhaps volcanic, perhaps exotic Hawaiian wood. There are a lot of arts and crafts shows in Waikiki that sell small blocks of wood for carving, or volcanic glass type material, but that takes a real special skill. Yet we have craftsman that can work with volcanic rock/glass here.

    Of course, Bamboo and similar is always available. But my first thought to be honest was Hawaiian Koa Wood for one of the scales;

    It would be my pleasure to organize a Razor Meet in Honolulu or Waikiki. Lots of wonderful places to stage a meeting as you know.
    I realize it's a long way for some, but if we could get a even a few from the mainland, and 10 or so guys from the islands, it would still be a great time.

    Just a thought for the future.

    There are some great woods there. I went to the 50th Wood Workers Guild show on the big island a few years ago. It was pretty impressive and quite a spectrum of local woods.

    It costs me almost the same to travel to most meets. I can fly to Honolulu for the same price as it costs me to travel to Calgary, Toronto, Seattle, or Houston. I have a meet planned for Texas in February, but after that I have no plans and would be happy to attend a meet there. It does not take a lot of people to have a great time with the details of honing and restoring and shaving. Most of the meets I have been to have focussed on honing and shaving.
