Just picked this up at an estate sale. The pictures don't do it jusitce, its colossal. The blade is 10/8", or 1-1/4" wide, and 3/8" thick! and whole thing measures 7-1/2" long. Appears fairly old, its got a leather case, and the scale is a solid piece of aluminum, which almost looks handcrafted?, no markings at all. I've never seen anything like it, maybe its for shaving a horse, or clearing saplings?? Anyone have any information about it?

Actually it fits in the case perfectly in every way, with the tang sticking out just enough. I was thinking microtome too, but cant figure why it needs to be so large...

I have been mulling it over. I am wondering if it was made for vet/farm use. Possibly to shave horses before surgery/suturing? I don't know, just throwing it out there.

That was one of my first guesses actually, to shave either horses or cows

Whoever made it used the proper proportions of blade width to spine thickness. It should hone up nicely.

You laugh, but I promise you that if it were mine I'd clean her up, take her to the stones, and then dance with the big gal...big razors need whiskers too....

Microtomes are ground flat on one side, this one is hollow on both. Plus, all the microtomes I've had have been much smaller than this
