Thread: Chat Connection Problem

As many of you know I am no expert when it comes to IRC...
I just tried to get on the chat, and some dude named barjavel told me that I need to identify via SASL to get on the server.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Note: I tried Googling a solution, but reading the IRC stuff is like reading a foreign language, only geekier.

I have no idea what that error is. I didn't know IRC had a bot called barjavel...

IRC tells me there is no such nick or channel... try again, and copy/paste the message... maybe we can figure this out.

This time it was leguin:

(11:45:40 PM) leguin.freenode.net: (notice) *** Notice -- You need to identify via SASL to use this server

This probably isn't specific to SRP... It seems that the problem is occurring before it tries to connect to #SRP.

edit: The Java client seems to be working (which is odd, because usually it doesn't work for me)... The problem seems to be isolated to using Pidgin as a chat client. I will continue searching for solutions, but it seems that, at least for now, I can connect via the Java client.

SASL authentication is supposed to be optional for freenode.
Check off the "Use SSL" box on the authentication settings, see if it helps:

Well, you're ahead of me, since you apparently know what IRC is.

I gave up on chat years ago for this very reason of being denied access with these types of error messages which were completely unintelligible to me, one who has absolutely no information systems smarts.

IRC is actually "Old School" as far as internet chatting goes.
