Thread: Question about photo albums

This may be an idiotic question, but regardless,.....

What do I have to do on my own computer to be able to upload photos to my site albums that are easily viewed.

For example, if you head over to my page and click my restorations album, the older photos are huge. If you go over to other people's albums, the photos when clicked load nice and square, fit to the page, etc.

Can somebody please guide me in the right direction.

the Forum looks to be using GD library for creation of the thumnails and such but is not set-up to resize peoples uploads. By the looks of it you are uploading images right out of camera with no editing.

Try downloading picasa from google and resizing them to 72 dpi and 800pixels on the long edge before uplaoding. Or if you ahve some other photo management utility like light room you can use that and export for email. which will shrink them for you

This is just from my observation. I could be wrong and one fo teh developers may know better

I do what dyimages has said.
I import the pictures from my camera to my computer. I then edit (although that is not always visible )
and select export as...
The image I put out for uploading to SRP is always JPEG, high quality, and with a size of max 900 pixels wide.

May be somebody can test how the album upload behaves now, the forum images are resized to 700x500 jpg if they're over that size or over the filesize limit which I don't remember off the top of my head. The library we use currently is imagemagick.

Of course, even if it works well now, old images which were uploaded before the software was set up to resize them are still going to be big until they're converted, or reuploaded.

I just don't have the time to test everything, esp. when there is no reason to believe it's broken.

Resize is working just fine. I would still suggest making smaller to speed up the upload process but Imagmagik is doing what it is supposed to

+1 on Picasa from google.

It does the first five things that most commonly need
to be done with little or no effort... And it is free.
If you want to take it one step beyond download the "GIMP".
The GNU Image Manipulation Program (like Photoshop) will
let you do almost anything to a photo. Both GIMP and
Photoshop are a bit over the top and require some serious
study to learn but there are times when you need
a full kit of tools. Both run on Windows or Linux ...
