Thread: Valuations Rule

I'm not trying to be impertinent here, but perusing the forum's ruleset gave me no knowledge of the rule about valuations. I realize that there are many "unwritten" rules on this forum, but that one seems like a good one to have written down so new users don't commit this faux pas. I know I did and felt like an ass when I was admonished for asking very loosely about something in chat.

Thanks for that, gssixgun. I admit that I haven't taken the time to read that particular thread yet, as is probably the case with many noobs. There are probably many who neglect to even read the general site rules

Anyway, I appreciate the hard work you mods do for the community and thank you for it.

You aren't the only one. The way it comes across most of the time is " your a idiot, you should have ready the rules". While I'm sure that's not what is intended, it does come across that away alot of the time. When in fact, it's not (at least last time I looked). It helps that it is post in the "Workshop" but most of these questions get asked in the "Razors" section.
If it is to be a rule it should be posted in the "SRP rules of conduct". That what it is clear to any that reads.

"Rules?!?!" You mean there are some rules on this site? What rules are you referring to? I kid in jest of course. I think most new members here are so excited to join SRP and that being the case like most of us, we just click the "I agree" box when signing up without actually reading what our membership and the rules that govern this forum actually entail. They just want to be active, post comments, and have questions answered. I had a misstep early in my membership, as I am sure a lot of us have had at sometime or other, but it was quickly and politely corrected by a moderator and because of that, I am the wiser thankfully. As with shaving with a straight, we learn something new everyday.


On a side note, just a suggestion here, maybe under the SRP logo and where it says "The Orginal Shaving Forum" an SRP developer could add an asterick saying something to the affect, "Don't even think about asking how much this razor is worth?"

I guess that its how the things are handled. Few people ever read rules when they sign up to a forum and its easy when people break a rule to advise them in a friendly what they have done, I think if someone replies saying, or implying, someone is an idiot then its they that has the problem.

Clearly if people just come here solely for the purpose of valuation and have no intention of contributing then they are trying to use the forum in a way that its not intended, but equally some will come having been given an old item, want to learn to use it and just wonder if its worth much. I would hope that the members and admin team would retain an open mind in their dealing certainly until they establish if someone is just here for some free appraisals.

yea, tis true, few people read the rules like few do research or read the Wiki.

Of course if we one day get together and wrote down every rule conceivable the list would probably be so long no one would read it and if they did they wouldn't remember them however Glen is right we are looking at it.

When I first joined the site there were almost no written rules. Of course there were only a handful of members back then so we really didn't need them.

Honestly I never saw this rule in the wiki, either.

First Razor

A member states in the above thread that valuation is prohibited. Valuation on the face of it doesn't seem to be a commonsense style of offense. It's prohibited for reasons which must be explained to be understood.

I know the mods, etc. are working on updating the rules, etc. but it's shame that anyone would be made to feel ashamed for having violated a rule which was not officially posted in a centralized location, whether in chat or in posts.
