Thread: Art of Shaving?

As a new user of SRP, I want to thank you for all the great advice. I was wondering if anyone uses Art of Shaving products? I've been using their aftershave which I really like but it's not cheap! Also just ordered some Musgo Real Classic Shaving Cream which I can't wait to try from classicshaving.com. Any other suggestions/recommendations would be appreciated.

Art of shaving is good stuff, and yes a bit over priced...but in the wet shaving world..grooming products seem to be more expensive than their grocery store counterparts. There are plenty of creams out there at different prices to try! I used to use nothing but AOS but i found that i like Taylor of old bond street better!

I've used AOS sandalwood cream, soap, pre-oil, and AS balm, and I like them all very much. Yes, they are pricey though.

I used the AOS cream ages ago. It's quality stuff but expensive like all their products. I would advise one of the English Milled Soaps. Trumpers, Harris are two examples. There are several. Also Castle Forbes Cream is top rated. Fitjars which SRD carries is very nice. Mitchells is good stuff too.

Thanks! Will definitely try out some of your favorites. Do you typically buy online? I'm a NYer and haven't found a good shop for shaving products yet. Am also thinking of getting a second straightblade. If you have any suggestions for where to buy this too that would also be apprecaited.

i just bought a jar of AOS jasmine shaving cream.... i am kinda "meh.." over it right now.... but last night i added a bit to some van der hagen the wife got me at wally world... with a dollop of glycerine mixed in it.....

worked better.... still got a touch of rash under the chin which i will attribute to pressure/angle/elves...

I discovered that I like their shave soap. It took an
afternoon with a puck of Williams to learn how to
get the most out of the more expensive AOS soap.

Their brushes are a bit floppy but are very good brushes
that work well with creams. I should note that the floppy
bit is a preference and design choice thing not a quality thing.
My AOS brush and Proraso play well together.
My Thater plays well with all my shave soaps and creams.
My DOVO "Micarta" Silvertip was my best value top of the line brush
and I bought it locally.
My $7 boar brush still gets used a lot.

If the shop is close there is no shipping charge. This makes
a big deal for a puck of shave soap of some creams. I wish
the AOS shops had a wider selection -- there are so many
great soaps and creams.

Their big market is cart razors not straights so take that
into account. Cart razors seem to like preshave oils and
stuff where straight razors could care less.

If you get a straight from them do plan to send it out to a "honemaster" at
least once to get the bevel set so you can maintain it by hand with
a minimum kit of hones. 50/50 odds that it is ready to shave... so
sending it out may be soon or months later.

The last sales lady I talked to obviously did not shave
so while well trained had no "opinions" I could value.

Mugs and cups and stuff.. it can be important to hold
them in your hand. A real store gives you that opportunity.

Shop with care and you will be fine.

AOS is a great shave cream, expensive, love the lavender. It is sold in the more expensive malls and department stores. GOOGLE the product, then hit the "shopping" button for the list of stores.

There are a couple places in Manhattan that are well stocked with shave supplies. Pasteur's is one, I can't think of the other but someone will come along with the name.

I've been to Pasteur's in NYC once when I was visiting the city. They have many, many different razors, blades, soaps and creams, and post-shaving products. It's the most comprehensive collection I've seen. There prices seem to vary a lot compared to what you would pay in other places. Sometimes they seem a bit lower and for some items they seem unreasonably high, so if you go have a good idea of what you might pay elsewhere. It's definitely fun to browse there, but if I lived too close to it, I would be broke for sure!

Here's a link to their Murray Hill store on Yelp. They also have a store on the Upper East Side, but that location doesn't have nearly as much in stock and their prices seemed higher to me.
