Thread: Double Boiling Method??

Please help me understand what this is..
Heard it saves the scent of the soap as opposed to microwaving the pucks..
Also, can you only melt down glycerin based soaps?

Double boiling is essentially floating one pot in another pot full of boiling water. It's used frequently in baking to melt chocolate without scorching it.

They used to make bowls that had little wings on them (like flat handles) and they worked wonderfully. You would just let the wings rest on the bigger pot's lip and go to town. It's harder to do without a setup like that, but if you're careful it's doable. A warning, use the least amount of water you can get away with (but not so little that it will boil away to nothing) or you run the risk of having the water splash into your product while you stir, boil, etc.

Yep about 1 inch of water around the soap bowl will do the trick, Keep in mind that Glycerin soap melts at about 160 F so the water does not even really have to boil.. Also you do not have to completely melt the puck, as soon as the puck melts enough to be even across the bottom of the bowl turn off the heat...

I have heard multiple times from multiple people on this forum that other soaps could be melted in, but amazingly not one person has shown us how... So until I see a step by step process with pics I won't try again...

I know I really put this in the wrong spot, but it's a little experiment I did the other day. This was with Windsor soap, a vegetable oil soap I believe. Even though I didn't melt it fully (could have done it for longer) it worked quite well.

Yes I saw that thread and I was wondering about what type of soap it was it???
To clarify though, I have heard tell that soaps such as Mitchell's Wool Fat can be melted in that one in particular I would like to know how to do it...but really any of the hard milled soaps...

Well I tried to double boil the Tabac soap that I had already used the cheese grater on.. Not only does Tabac NOT melt in the microwave but it generally did nothing other than get slightly warm from double boiling for over 15 min.. I couldn't even mold it into a ball or form it to the bowl without it breaking into the shredded bits again..
EPIC FAIL!

yeah I failed on the Tabac too and shreded enough to semi-mold it in one of the sugar bowls
