Thread: Derby Lemon

Today I was on The Superior Shave ordering a jar of CrOx paste. I noticed that if I ordered something else, it was $2 less. So I went searching through their catalog for something light that would make it worthwhile and I opted to try a tube of Derby Lemon...at $4.75 for a tube (which came out to $2.75 adjusted for the savings in CrOx), I couldn't turn it down.

So I went looking for some reviews...found one here that wasn't terribly positive. This is my first time trying a new cream, as I've used the same tube of Real Shaving Co. since I began 5 weeks ago...luckily I've still got a few more weeks in that tube! Can I expect there to be a different lathering experience? Or do all creams more or less (within reason, that is) lather with the same amount of effort?

I've never tried the Derby cream, but I've read multiple reviews about it on another forum and most of them said it was OK stuff. Nobody is fooled thinking it's a high end product, but a decent work a day cream.

“Derby Limon” creates a fine lather and has a very pleasing and fresh lemon scent.
It needs larger quantity compared with others to create lather.
I believe you will enjoy it.

Derby is a good cream. Not spectacular, but a good cream. I put it in a group with some of the other inexpensive workhorse creams such as Erasmic, Ingram and Arko creams. At the price point they never disappoint and can be used day in and day out.

I like reviews, but you really have to take them with a grain of salt. There are so many factors that contribute to good lather (water quality is a big one) that it's impossible for everyone to agree on everything. There's even disagreement on general concensus; some will hate well known performers, while others will love crappy products. For proof just do a search on Mitchells Wool Fat and Williams

My point is you never know until you try.

So I used my Derby cream for the first time tonight.

I really, really liked it. It took awhile to learn the right combination of cream and water, and so I ended up with A LOT of extra cream. Still, I can tell you need more than usual, so I don't think the tube will last as long as my Real Shaving Co has (almost 2 months now...and there's a lot more to go). It was a nice, thick cream with a great scent...it dried up pretty quickly on my face though.

I will continue using it, but only as a break from the Real Shaving stuff. Considering RS's ready availability at every Rite Aid around me, it'll be my go-to cream with other (maybe nicer?) creams popping up every once in a while to keep things interesting.
