Thread: Can I melt this soap?

I have yet to started shaving with a straight yet, but have been using the van der hagen soap from wally world and a brush for a while now.

My question is can this soap be melted? Also the double boiler method has me a bit confused. Do I just heat a pot of water with the mug (in my case a porcelain ramekin) inside and the soap in the the mug?

The ingredients:
propylene glycol, sorbital, water, sodium stearate, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium myristate, sodium cocoyl, isethionate, aloe barbaensis leaf juice (aloe vera) butyrospermum parkii (shea butter) fragrance, titanium dioxide, triethanolamine, fd&c yellow #5, fd&c red#40

even easier, put it in the container you want it in, then microwave it in 10 second bursts until it melts.
then while its still melted, add a few splashes of your favorite AS or anything to add scent. let it harden and you've got yourself some nice scented soap.

So I tried the microwave, but after the second round it just sorta bubbled everywhere. Now it's melted fine, but there is a soap layer to the top of the container, as well as down the outsides.

I find it easier to grate and press shaving soaps into bowls. I've done this with VDH specifically and I find it easier than melting.

VDH is very meltable. I've actually taken pucks of it, melted them, added a few drops of essential oil and lanolin, stirred, nd let them solidify again, and used, what I liked to call, "Super VDH." i used a microwave, but your method seems a lot better, honestly.
