Thread: Shaving Cream: Tub vs Tube

Hey guys,

Recently a member made a claim that creams of the same make/scent are of differing quality when in tub or tube. I believe that he stated tubed creams are inferior. For example, T&H 1805 in the tube is of inferior quality to 1805 in the tub.

To my knowledge the cream is the same, just packed in large and small sizes, and to me it doesn't make a lot of sense to have an inferior product sold under the same name.

So, what are your opinions? Has anyone else found this to be true, or is it all the same regardless of packaging?

I haven't experienced this myself, I'm with you on thinking there's no point using an inferior product in tubes. I always figured they were for ease of use when travelling but I could be wrong. It certainly wouldn't be the first time!

In my opinion, it doesn't matter as long as the container does not allow the cream to spoil whether it is in a tube or tube. I have creams in the metal tube (Bigelow), the plastic tube (Creighton), and some in tubs (AOS and Cella). They all are working out great for me.

As for your statement about T&H being inferior in the tube, maybe it's the metal in the tube that is reacting to the cream? Hard to say, so I am just offering up a speculation for pondering. However, with modern packaging technology and the manufacturer's concern for quality and long shelf life, is the inside of the T&H tube lined or bare metal? This can turn into a discussion about industrial engineering, but I don't want to steer off topic.

Hey Patrick,

I just wanted to clarify that I wasn't picking on T&H in particular. I meant pretty much any company that makes cream and packages them in both travel tubes and tubs, like Trumpers, TOBS, Truefit, Penhaligons etc.

I don't necessarily think this whole thing is true as it doesn't make a lot of sense. Plus, buying travel tubes is a great way to sample premium products at half the price of the full size.... ( wink wink for the cream newbs)

My money is on the amount of product used being different.

After that storage might be an issue.
I have never seen date codes but depending on the
seller shelf life etc there could be second order differences.

Scent for sure can be different with age or container Opening
a tub of cream presents the user with a blast of
scent on opening while a tube is sealed and does not
have an air space to collect, build and hold that initial blast.

You're fine. I thought you were talking about it in general or as an example. It's an interesting topic. Niftyshaving made a good point that when you open a tub, you get a nice blast of scent. But when you open up a tube, the scent takes a little more time to reach your nose. I also liked his point about no date codes too.

I didn't want to get too technical about it all and run the topic off course. I almost went into a "lecture" on statistical process control, but applied the brain brakes firmly!!

I'm one of those yahoos who carefully roll up the tube in order to get every little bit of the product out. I'm not cheap or a spendthrift, I just enjoy the challenge!! My wife gets me to squeeze out every bit of lotions for her.

Tube, tub, makes no difference to me. Either way, I'll get every last drop out of it.

Better stay away from those tubes. It's a slippery slope. First you use "convenient" tubes then you'll be using aerosol cans and before you know it you'll be wanting to use a cartridge razor.

I have found no difference the quality of the cream in tube or tub. Which do I prefer? Give me the tub, because I can swirl the brush in it.
