Thread: Glideability? Taylor OBS vs. Truefitt

I have been using CO Bigelow/Proraso and find that it wants to skip in a few places which I would like to eliminate. I've ordered some TOBS-sandalwood due to the great reviews on this topic, and wondering if Truefitt would be crem de crem or if it's just overpriced with negligible effect?

Or any other comments on the two if anyone has used them both.

IMHO, Caste Forbes makes the best creams of what's easily available now, easy to lather and superior glide.

Both products are used by many here with great results so my guess is if the razor wants to skip it's not the soap that to blame. You might want to play with the amount of product you are using or the water ratio. Is the stuff drying on you or simply not performing no matter how much lather you have?

Yeah it does seem to be drying on me a bit so I keep relathering the bowl, slightly wetting the bowl when needed. Not sure what's up with that. Am I over watering or under? I get nice meringue peaks initially. But I think my newbie 30 minute shaves are taking their toll on the lather.

I also live in a cold part of the country and the eucalyptus isn't ideal in the winter... So I'd like to find another "winter" option.

Truefitt smells much better than tobs. Tobs works okay but it does not give you such a pleasant experience. Maybe i'm saying this after having visited a truefitt and a tobs store in a row. The tobs rose smells very bad. The th rose smells as a rose does.

30 minutes is a lot to ask of most soaps. You need a really rich thick lather to last the longest. Some of these weaker and airier lathers will just disappear on you. You can try more water but at some point the lather will suffer from too much. I think the English Milled soaps or a cream like Castle Forbes is what you need.

Yes: with time i mean the more you shave the less it takes but try with a merkur futur or slant to cut corners and get a good shaving in two passes. With straight razors i cannkt shave myself in less than 30 mins for the time being!!!

T&H and TOBS are both top tier products, and you can't go wrong with either. I've heard many complaints over the years that Taylors is the worst of the 3 T's and is subpar in general: hard to lather, short on glide, disappears quickly etc. IME nothing could be further from the truth. My Taylor products lather and glide up there with the best of 'em, and I've tried many brands.

However, try to stay away from scent recommendations for the simple reason that scent is highly subjective. Someone may tell you a soap smells like crap and you may love it, and vice-versa. You never know until you sample it yourself.
