Thread: non lathering shave gel/cream

Hello All

I am new to the straight shave game and I am looking for some information on a shaving gel/cream that does not lather. I know its contrary to most peoples preference but I was hoping that there was someone out there that uses/used one to help me out

I've tried a few non-lathering gels over the years. They are for the most part designed for use with multi-blade disposables. They work fairly well with DE/SE safety razors. Straights on the otherhand perform rather poorly with the gels, IMO. I am interested to hear if the new Razorock non-lathering gel works with straights. Their products are generally held in high regard with wet shavers.

Caswell Massey doesn't seem to lather very well IME. I picked up some "rise" shave gel at the dollar store recently that is a "low foam formula". Kind of has the consistency of a hair gel but you could still work it in with a brush (I did). Good luck on finding others.

When travelling light, I've used just King of Shaves oil on a wet face. It works fairly well, but I wouldn't make a habit of it.

Ursa Major shaving cream is my brushless choice a bit expensive and a bit of an odd consistency but always gives a good shave

I believe that Burts Bees Wax is non lather shave cream. I got some for the holiday but havent used it for a shave yet.

I have tried Noxzema but did not like it. I don't think it is still available, I only see pressurized cans when I look for it on internet. In the 80's they used to have a tub with Noxzema, had a strong artificial pepperminty smell.

Lucky Tiger cream shave is pretty decent, and I love the smell.

You might give Cremo cream a try, unlike some brushless creams you wont get any lather, but it is very slick and provides excellent glide, and is available at Shoppers Drug Mart or Rexall Pharmacy for under $10.
I also have a tube of Wilkinson sword cream that I found at a dollar store, that is fairly usable.

Okay, I see the OP did not specify if they wanted information on good shaving gel/cream that doesn't lather. But you haven't even told him anything about this stuff. Burt's Bees is crap. At least it isn't false advertising. It's like having bee's vomit and poop processed into a uniform shaving "product" and then attempting to shave with it. Don't have it, never tried it. It's just that other posters have written of it unanimously opposed to the idea of its existence I thought I'd share.

Avalon Organics is a really good "cream shave" that doesn't lather. It's got great moisturizing and skin softening properties, truly a 2-in-1 product. Price has climbed to about a dollar an ounce but it's certainly worth it.
