Just rubbed my Le Grelot on my John Holmes Coticule for about 20 laps then onto metal polish on card for about 10, then back for 10 or so more on the coticule then as many as it took on the metal polish till it mowed arm hair.
It's not as sharp as I think I could get it yet, but it is already up there with my best efforts!!
A shave will tell though.
I think the steel is quite hard as I usualy see more wear on the spine than there is, after that many laps on 12 inches of Belgian.
I got my Le Grelot today. Fit and finish are good but this blade has quite a smile on in. I am having some real problems honing it. I am not a super experienced honer but have usually been able to get a fully hollow to come my way and have yet to have a razor that did not come out very good. I also have a slight bend in the spine which makes the bevel wide at the heal and narrow at the tip.
I am wondering if I should send this one back. The smile is probably almost 1/16 of an inch. The other Le Grelots that I have also have a slight smile but not like this one. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I really think that the weight and feel are great and much nicer than most hollows that I have had.
Thanks a lot,
Richard
They will take it back, minus postage I believe.
The bevel on mine is much larger on one side of mine too, but there is barely a smile to the blade.
Mine isn't a very flat razor, but nothing too bad thankfuly.
Send it back, I'd be cheeky and ask for "help" with the postage. Don't say you have honed it though! Just say the steel is too warped or something.

I ordered mine on the 6th and it just arrived today. Can't wait to strop it up and give it a run. Unfortunately, that isn't going to be until Friday, since I just shaved this morning.
For the cost of shipping it back to the UK, I personally would just send it to be honed by one of the pros on this forum for not much more coin, since as you said, the smile can be a bit tricky to hone yourself. If you otherwise like the razor, that is. If you send it back, you'd just have lost money for shipping both ways, with no razor to show for it. The minor difference in bevel width/grind on either side is not really a big deal in terms of shaving or honing, once the bevel has been set.
Hi,
It took me 3 weeks or so of careful honing before this razor was truly shave ready. But after the coticule and diamond paste on a Handamerican bench hone, it's truly keen. Great value!

Ladies and Gentlemen.
How about a box for your Le Grelot?
