The Hess Ezy Shave is a disposable blade straight razor made for the barber/beauty trade. It's designed to use Personna injector blades. The body is stainless steel in a U shape with very tight flanges to hold the blade edge. There is more metal inside the stamped housing, probably for weight. The handle is white plastic. One inserts an injector blade into a tight steel carrier, which is then inserted into the razor. Both operations take a lot of effort, watch those fingers. It's a very tight fit and the blade does not slide or wobble. The two flanges come to within about one eight of the blade's edge which makes it difficult to cut yourself very deeply. It also makes for a really stiff, unforgiving blade.

The razor comes with two blade holders, so I decided to try a Feather Pro Guard in one. To get the feather into the holder, I had to remove a little strip of sheet metal from the holder and cut it to allow for the extra length of the feather blade. Height was OK. Weight of the Hess is one and a half ounces on my scale, similar in size and weight to a regular straight razor. It feels nicely balanced and well made.

It is not, of course, a regular straight razor. The blades are too sharp and the angle to the face much steeper. Nor does it have the three blade versatility of that other, more expensive, pseudo straight, the Dovo Shavette, but it lets you try something like straight razor shaving for around $20, without paying for a hone and strop. When you finally buy that hollow ground beauty of a straight razor, you can keep the Hess for travel
