    Default Diamond spray question?

    Hello,

I have a 3'' Latigo strop with a 3" Cotton Herringbone Weave canvas. I put some 15 carat diamond spray .5 micron on the canvas side. How often should I spray the canvas with the spray? Should I spray each time I use the strop??

    Thanks

    Definitely not every time!

Also, you should not use a diamond treated strop every time you strop. This is only done following honing or for an occasional touch up. As far as how often you apply the diamond spray, I'd estimate I re-apply it about every 50 razors. You basically re-apply it when you no longer see any effect from the stropping.

any reason not to use SRD diamond spray on horsehide (rather than say hard felt)? I happen to have a horsey strop available to use.

The diamond media is a little bit harsher than stuff like CrOx, as the particles of diamond are more jagged than the CrOx particles. I found dimaond on leather left the edge a little too harsh for my taste and I prefer CrOx on leather.

I have my diamond spray on a homemade denim flatbed hone, and that works very well. All I did was glue a piece a denim fabric to a bit of old windowsill and voila! You can make a denim strop at home very easily from a pair of old jeans. Having the diamond on denim really took the harshness out of it, but left that very sharp edge, and I much prefer it that way!

Good luck and keep us posted!

Well, I guess I know what I'm doing wrong. Then again, I only do a few strokes (5 or 6) for most razors.

Does the diamond spray on felt (or denim) not result in such a harsh edge because they absorb the medium better, or somethign like that? Also, I've sanded the back side of my horsehide strop so that is kind of a flat but roughed surface now - would that be a better fit for a diamond spray?

I really think the felt is the best surface for the diamond spray because of the cushion. For me the results are very nice. Actually, I like using CrOx on felt too. The diamond paste on leather can be a little harsher, but less strokes helps. I generally find that the pastes work well on leather or your webbing material. I think the denim material lets the particles from the spray embed some which would also take some of the harshness out.

Thanks Lynn. One other basic question. I tend to hone with one layer of tape. If I've honed a razor with one layer of tape, should I do any finishing or touchups on felt/diamond spray with a layer of tape?

Or like the leather strops, does the felt flex such that you don't need the tape?

If I am using tape, I tend to leave it on until I strop on leather.
