Thread: Cut Strop

About 2 months ago I had a lapse in coordination while stropping and took a 1/2 inch gouge out of my strop. "Luckily" the gouge was only about 1/4 of the way up the strop leaving me about 9 inches to freely strop without passing over the gouge. I feel that my technique is fine but is there any problem that I may experience stropping on a smaller length of leather in the long run?

The only difference I feel is that I have to cross the razor over strop much more quickly than I did before the gouge. Before, I could make a less dramatic cross because I had more room to work with. (if that makes sense) I'll eventually get around to replacing the leather or getting a new strop but it will have to wait a little longer

If there is a loose flap of leather involved you can super glue it down and continue using the entire strop.

I actually read that when doing a bit of searching around before I posted this. Unfortunately at the time I didn't know this and I removed the flap of leather so now its like a pothole in the middle of my strop

It would be possible, although difficult, to cut an identical piece of leather out of another area of the strop to fill the pothole with.

Also, you could sand away the margins of the pothole and blend it in with the rest of the strop and still use it.

I had another suggestion about a little bit of blacktop and a tiny little steamroller, but I doubt that will work.

If the metal hanger will work for it you can buy a replacement leather from Straight Razor Designs. Pretty cool because you can pick from a variety of models based on your preference for draw. Cheaper than buying the whole shebang.

Thanks Jimmy, I completely forgot about the replacement leather. I'll check it out but I wonder if the SRD leather will fit into a Vintage Blades strop. I'll be doing some photo comparisons later to see if it might work
