Thread: Modular paddle strop. Now what?

Ok still being new to this I just got the SRD modular paddle (beautifully crafted BTW). As advertised it comes with 2 felt, 1 scrub leather, 1 premium leather and .5 diamond spray. I sprayed 1 felt with the diamond spray (6 sprays to coat evenly) and left 1 untreated. My question is I have a razor I am trying to hone myself and what order should i go after a Naniwa 12k? And any sugestions for a lap count would be appriciated.

I would recommend just 10 very light X strokes on the .5 felt followed by 10-20 strokes on the scrub leather and 40-60 on the Premium I leather.

Forgot to mention the razor is a Henckels 415 if that makes any difference.

Quick clearification. Is that light strokes on just the sprayed felt? Or should all strokes be light on a paddle?

I'm obviously not Lynn but I can tell that you you never want alot of pressure when doing anything with a razor I believe he was just making it clear that with the diamond sprayed felt you want to use extra light strokes. The diamond will give it a slight honing effect so light pressure is more important. With the other mediums just strop as you normally would.

++++1 On the advice offered so far. I have the SRD paddle strop and use it exclusively to maintain the sharpness of my straight razor blades. Like Lynn said, light strokes on the diamond sprayed felt, then the rough/scrub leather, followed by stropping on your regular strop. It works for me--and it will for you as well.

How does stropping on the rough leather compare to stropping on linen?

What Lynn said for sure. I used a 4 sided paddle strop for over a year when I first started. I had 1.0, 0.5, and 0.25 in diamond paste that was applied to leather. I have since used the felt and it is excellent and does a very good job calming down the harshness that one can get from a diamond edge. The stropping motion is extremely light and is a very good introduction into the world of honing in general because that light "touch" is something you need for honing on rocks as well as on your face. This system of keeping a razor going is good because, in the beginning, all the information is overwhelming and learning to just shaving with a straight is all one can handle. They have a winner with the modular paddle strop for sure! I love mine. Just relax and enjoy!
