Thread: Best quality CrOx paste for leather strop

Hi guys,
I tried to do a search and came up with some info, but not enough to make an informed decision, so I would appreciate some guidance.

I've heard that HandAmerican CrOx paste is one of the best out there (as far as purity is concerned and consistency in "particle" size. Is this true? any others?

If so, I've been trying to email Keith (at Hand American) a few times, but I have not heard anything back. Anyone know how to get a hold of him (the website only has an email address, nothing more)? Or alternatively, anyone know where I can get my hands on some of this stuff?

I'd go to SRD. They sell a CrOx spray and a CrOx crayon, both of which are great. I have one of the crayons and it works really well for applying the paste, and the CrOx is of extremely high quality.

You are a genius ...Thank you. That's exactly what I was looking for, but now I'd like to hear what other have to say about quality of it and if it's a good thing to use on leather strops, etc.

I have the same crayon or stick and have been using it for some time on a leather bench strop and it works great. The ones you want to avoid are those they sell in lapidary shops and artist paint supply outfits because they contain other things.

Thanks guys...I was under the impression that the liquid form is better than the paste, or is that just hogwash?

I have the Puma crayon, I have had it for 30 years and it still hasn't dried out.

At one point member ChrisL was selling packets of the good stuff (chrome ox, that is ), which, if I'm not mistaken, was originally the Hand American variety. He's not nearly as active here as he used to be, but try contacting him anyway and see what happens. I can vouch for it personally, it's good chrome ox!

Just another option. The Kremer pigments CrO was very popular with the European forums a while back.
Chrome Oxide Green - Mineral Pigments - Kremer Pigments Inc.
The powder is supposedly 0.3 um but don't quote me on that. IIRC some used the acrylic paint & put it on a linen strop like the Dovo white. I got some of the powder from another member a while back & it works well but I like the diamond spray on felt , less messy.

Wowww...Thanks for the link. That stuff is 98%+ pure and 0.3µ average size. pretty good stuff. I imagine one can dissolve this in mineral oil or neetsfoot oil and apply to leather?
