Default Thanks for the strops Euclid440 !

I never was much for trying pastes but Marty came by my shop 1 day and he brought some strops with Crox and CBN on them for everybody that was there. Thanks again !!! I had fished up this restore on an 8/8 Grieves and had it honed up for a test shave. I actually had 5 to test. After shaving morning AND evening to get them tested (which I won't ever do again :<0) I felt they were nice but not there yet. Something was missing or I was just sooo used to my Ducks I was unsure of the feel. Wolfpack had honed a W&B 9/8 for me a long time ago so I had a great benchmark to go by. I put them back on the bench for another round on the finishers but then I spot the gifts Marty gave me right there next to the Zulu so I gave them a whirl. Forgetting everything Marty had told me, I just gave the Greaves 25 laps on the Crox/canvas with a lite spray of water. Then a good wipe down. Then 25 more with the CBN and a spray on what looks like a this hard felt/cotton strop. Wiped down and used for a morning shave.
THAT DID IT ! I wasn't shocked or overly impressed but I am very glad I now have this in my arsenal of tricks.

So I was either testing this out late at night or I just didn't pay attention but as I took this pic I noticed 2 flavors of CBN. Not sure which I used but will be paying more attention in the future. It's nice to be able to tell what you doing with what
Cool little spray bottle Marty gave us also. If you other guys haven't tried yours out yet your missing something.

Big Thanks Marty, you added a little something to my bench that will be there from now on.

Yeah very cool of Marty to give those out. CBN has never disappointed me - it has always improved an edge.
Like you say it's nice to have an arsenal

It's cubic boron nitride. You can get it a few places like chef knives to go or through Amazon. It's just another abrasive, similar to what you mentioned you already have. But just personally I have found the feel to be superior from CBN. JMO

Jerry you donít have to mist the Chrome Oxide, but you do the CBN. I do 3-4 sprays on the strop then do 20-40 laps. Distilled water works best.

The .50 is more for refreshing a flagging edge, the .125 can be used daily in place of leather.

Clean the razor by stropping on the plain side of the blue sail cloth, (use like linen) before using the CBN, it contaminates easily. If the Sail Cloth frays cut the threads with a sharp scissor, do pull on them, the fraying will stop. And whatever you do, do not burn off with a match.

If you do 20-40 laps on the .125 CBN for about a week it will get the edge finer and smoother, then 15-20 laps daily will keep it going for a long time.

After honing I do 20-30 laps on the Chrome, then 20-30 on the .50 CBN then 20 on the .125 and shave. Leave the CBN strop hanging and it will dry in 30 minutes or so.

I have also been doing 10-15 laps on the plain Sail Cloth, or the Chrome Oxide between stone progression while honing, and getting very nice straight edges that come together quicker. Just dry the blade and wipe clean and dry, strop then move on the next stone.

    Enjoy.

I get my CBN from Ken Schwartz at CKTG, Chefs Knives To Go, It is a bit pricy but the .125 and possibly the .50 is all you need and will last a long, long time, many years. A sprayed strop like I made for Jerry and the guys will last years, it will become contaminated before it wears out.

CBN is second to Diamond in hardness but has a different shape and does not leave the deep stria common with Diamond. Actually with enough laps it will remove all stria at 400X magnification and leave a very keen smooth shaving edge.

Copied and pasted, will print out. At least until it becomes a habit. I am going to run some of my Satinedges over them when I get back in rotation. Been test driving a lot of new ones lately so not really the best time to look for differences. My face doesn't know what's going on right now. 8/8 Greives 1 day, 5/8 Spike the next. The water I put on the crox was 1 shot mist and will stop doing that. I was smart enough to thoroughly clean between strops. I can hardly wait to give it a better test now. Thanks again !

In case you don't know, go up to the first post and the little tool bar just above it ...... click on "thread tools" and in the drop down menu, 'subscribe to this thread'. Unless you've got 'don't send email' clicked in your subscribed threads settings, every time someone posts you'll get an email so click that in your profile if the emails would be an annoyance. Cool that Euclid sent the strops/CBN to you, let us know how you like it.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
