Default Any experience with Griffith strops?

In another thread people have been talking about horse strops. I stumbled on this site and saw what look like some nice strops, in 2.5 and 3 inch widths:

Just curious what experience anyone's had with these?

There are a bunch of outfits out there that seem to fly under the radar and no one has apparently checked out from this site. I don't know if that is indicative of something or not.

Another such place is Phoenix Artisans who seem to carry a line of lower cost items.

I guess you will have to be the guinea pig and take the bullet for us and try one of their strops.

I've also looked at their site, not sure why I didn't go any farther than looking though.

    Thanks everyone!

I thought I must have missed a thread on this company but apparently not.

I may end up rolling the dice and seeing what their Horween Chromexcel horse strop is like -- perhaps a Christmas present for yours truly.

I think that some of the strops from Griffith Shaving are made by Matt in house. I have not purchased one, but I am thinking about it.

A few months ago, he listed a 3" wide shell cordovan strop that I really wanted, but could not afford at the time as I had some other expenses. Now he lists 2 1/2" shell only. I really want 3" to minimize the risk of nicking it with an X-stroke. He did not advertise the shell as Horween, so it may have come from another tannery.

The Chromexcel is exclusive to Horween. This is supposed to be rather stretchy leather; I do not know if this is good or bad.

If anyone does purchase one of Matt's strops, I would love to read a review. If I purchase one, I will do likewise.

Matt does offer a return policy, so if you purchase one and do not like the quality when it arrives, you can send it back for a refund.

You will not regret doing business with Matt and Ally’s company. If you are hunting for a 3” shell cordovan contact Matt and he will tell when he next expects 3” cordovan in stock, I believe his shell cordovan comes from Clayton of Chesterfield in England. Griffith is a great supplier to do business with be it new or refinshed straight razors, strops, paddle strops or any other products they carry. I have always been happy with my purchases from Griffiths.

There are several suppliers of shell cordovan besides Horween. That said Horweens products are world class and I would not hesitate to purchase shell cordovan whether it came from England, Spain, U.S. or Japan. Griffiths other strop leathers are perfectly suited to their intended use.

    Same here.

Nice to see a couple of thumbs-up for working with Matt. I got the impression from the website that he was a standup kind of guy with what look like really high-class products.

I have made several purchases from Matt at Griffith Shaving Goods. He is great to deal with. He responds quickly to emails. His pricing is fair and service is first rate.

I wanted to purchase a Wacker Old Sheffield 7/8". Matt's prices were below other advertised prices. His web site showed "out of stock" so I emailed him to ask when he might get in new inventory. He wrote back shortly thereafter to indicate that the website was in error. He had searched the physical inventory and found one for me. I had it a couple of days later. It is a wonderful shaver.

Based on that initial experience, I purchased another razor and a couple of natural hones from him. When he describes something on his web site, the description is accurate, not marketing hype. Fortunately, the shaving community has many reputable vendors. Unfortunately, there are a few who are not. Matt is one of the good guys.
