Thread: dovo strop care

hi guys, just wanted some quick advice with regards to a strop i bought a while ago.

its a 2" dovo strop that came with a white tube of paste (yellow tape on it) what is this and when is the best time to use this? also should i put it on the side i strop the razor on or the rear side of it?

You know, I've always felt your primary strop should be virgin, No pastes, No nothing. Most strops are made of quality leather and require nothing more than a good rub down with your hand from time to time. The natural oils in your hand provide enough conditioning, so don't do it after you've just washed them.

My understanding is the yellow striped Dovo tube is Strop Conditioner. I haven't used it, nor would I, but that's me. I'm sure other's have, and some of them may chime in. I have Solingen Strop 2", it's like a buffed leather, almost sueded. I wouldn't apply anything to that type especially...

I've read that some Latigo strops benefit from a very minimal application of Neetsfoot oil, rubbed into the strop with your hands...

It will be a looooog time before your strop ever needs anything, I have used neatsfoot oil in the past, but that was for vintage strops that hadnt been given the care they need. Palm oil from your hand will do just fine.

If the strop is dry then it needs a bit of conditioning, You said "Bought it a long time ago" if the leather isn't used/worked often then it might need some loving...
That Dovo conditioner works really well by just dabbing about 5 or so dots on the strop then rubbing it in with your palm like the guys said... You can also put it on the palm edge of your hand and do it that way and get a very even application...

Now once the strop is back in use, and you are rubbing it often with just the palm of you hand, it shouldn't need much else, other than maybe once a year or so...

Yea, just go by the condition. If it seems dry use some type of conditioner or oil. The only strop I have that hasn't needed some conditioning is my Kanayamara which specifically said to use nothing on it. I live in single digit humidity and it saps moisture out of everything including me. A tad of neatsfoot is what the doctor ordered, for my strops anyway.

thanks for the reply everyone, it still feels soft to the touch and theres no visible dryness or cracks etc so i figure all is well and just using the palms of my hands should be find.
